I'm Worried... Today is the first time that I am leaving Zoe home for 10 - 11 hours straight by himself. He is 6 months old and I gave him the run of the house but gated potentially dangerous areas of the house (kitchen, porch, bathroom). I don't want him eating anything not good for him. I am sick to my stomach at the thought of him being alone. He will only be alone for long periods of time on mondays and tuesdays. Someone will be there on and off every other day of the week. Am I being paranoid? I hate this. I just got into work and I'm worrying my butt off. HOw will I last the rest of the day? |
Hi Christine Maybe confine Zoe to one room, until you're both more secure in his being alone? If he's like Abbie, he'll eat/chew/gnaw anything that doesn't move! Maybe leave a radio or tv on for him? |
He will be fine....it is okay to worry but as long as you know that you put all the dangerous stuff out of his site/way then he should be fine!! Just think, once you get home...all the kisses and hugs he will give you!! My girls just sleep anytime we leave them alone....try not to worry and stay busy and the day will fly by!! |
Yes, you are being paranoid (LOL), but it's OK. We are all paranoid (in a nice way, though) when it comes to leaving our babies for the first time. If we weren't we wouldn't be such great mamas!! I think you have done everything to make his stay alone much easier. What I think is funny, is when you come home after a long time away and they first great you like you have been gone FOREVER, then they go get a long drink of water and maybe a couple bites of food. I am convinced they don't eat or drink much when we are gone. |
I think you're doing the opposite of what many of us do. My little guy is confined to the kitchen/laundry room area - and definitely does not get run of the house when I'm gone. There is nothing he can get to in the kitchen that would hurt him - and he has everything he needs. Plus the vinyl kitchen floor is a "quick clean" for any accidents he might have. I know we hate to leave our dogs home alone for so long - but, a lot of us - (all over America with a hundred different breeds) have the same problem. We have no choice. We couldn't afford dog food if we didn't work! Carol Jean |

I guess I wouldn't give him the run of the house while I was gone, they can chew on walls, door frames, furniture, carpet etc. I'd set up an x pen where there is nothing to chew on, like in the center of the kitchen, put in his bed, food, some toys and a pee pad. Leaving a radio or TV on might be nice too or maybe some easy listening music to keep him calm. Many dogs do not eat when they are alone, so that might be a concern. If he doesn't, you might want to put some karo in his water. Otherwise he should be fine. |
I'm sure he will be fine. Leaving the Radio or TV on for him might help. I bet hes' full of kisses when you get back. Hang in there!!!! :2hearts2: |
i pretty much agree with what everyone has said. I don't think you should give Zoe full run of the house. Instead, use the gate to confine him in one room that you consider safe for him to be in. I leave Nikko alone everyday of the week for about 8 hours (believe me it breaks my heart!! :( ) and I gate him in the kitchen. He is still not fully potty trained so I leave a wee wee pad, food, water, toys and a bed. I choose the kitchen because there are no electrical wires that he can chew on and the floor is easy to clean for accidents. He is used to this and doesn't fuss in the morning when I lock him in. It gives me peace of mind and it keeps him safe from potential accidents. |
Leave her a stuffed Kong and some chews to gnaw on. Rotate the toys you leave each day,although I think my pup sleeps mostly.I agree with all the other posters about being in one area-she will feel more secure. At puppy school they said if you can leave them with a view of the world-ie a window or glass door to look out of and see the outside.Then they don't get so bored. She will be fine,but will need lots of play and a walk when you get home.Her energy levels will be high and yours low after work. |
My suggestion is the same as everyone else . . confine him so you won't come home to a wrecked house. My Tiger loves to chew on my indoor plants including dirt, moldings and anything that fancies his desire. . . .so I crate him for 7 hours and then come home release him and take him for a walk (now that is is warmer) so he can relieve himself. He has been pretty good since I started crating him at 3 months and this schedule seem to work for me and Tiger as he is so used to it . . . but when I come home, I made sure he has free run of my house (well the living room, dining room and kitchen) but just in case he decides to tinkle away as he becomes super active running everywhere like a rat, he wears a belly band :thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup: |
My advice would also be to confine him to an area where he cannot get into trouble. Another suggestion would be to give him plenty of exercise BEFORE you leave so that he'll be tired out and hopefully snooze most of the day. And plenty of attention and exercise when you come home too. |
I came home and he's FINE! There no mess of any sort. YAY!! At about 10 hours in and I was still at work I had my friend break into my house to take him to the park. I have to make her a set of keys so that she can take him when she can. I had her check the house and not a thing was out of place and no accidents! I am a proud mama! Thank you all for your advice. I think letting him have the run of the house is ok cuz he mainly stays in my room anyway. I block off "dangerous" areas. PS - I don't work till noon tomorrow so his alone time will be fairly shorter. KUDOS for Zoe!! |
