Letting your Yorkie grow out!!! I have a little guy Yorkie with the most wonderful hair in the world (silky/wavy) - easy to manage. I plan to keep him in a fairly short cut always - because it's easy - and he is so cute this way. He looks like the "All American little Disney Dog." He really looks like a "rough, tough, little terrier." He couldn't be cuter. However, I am tempted to let him grow out "once in his life" just to see what it's like and how he looks. How many of you who have and prefer short-haired little Yorkies have been tempted to let them grow out "just once." Carol Jean PS: I'm the one who has the grooming-nightmare (albiet beautiful) Bichon. So, personally, I enjoy having at least one little guy who is almost no work at all. Carol Jean |
I don't have my yorkie yet, but I plan to let her hair grow out just to see if I can handle it. I figure if it gets too much and I am finding it is to much work I can always go to the puppy cut, but I love the long hair look! :D |
Carol Jean, I had those exact thoughts just yesterday! lol. I think it would be pretty, but I honestly don't want to have to keep Tucker clean, which I know would be very difficult. Now, Tripp is impossible to let grow. The mats- are endless. |
I love the long hair! On my other yorkies I just sent them to the groomers once a month and they looked like they were in show coats. I hope to do that with Cali but she had so much hair chopped off when she had surgery it set her back about 4 -5 months. |
i've been letting my 1 yr old grow since last fall and it's pretty long, but he has a cotton coat and get's a few matts , i can get a comb through it when i groom him. my problem is he loves the water and now that it is getting warm we have started setting up our pool so now he thinks whenever he goes out he can get in it and i dont have time to brush him everytime he goes out. and i do have a cover on the pool but he gets in when i am working on it. we also have a small water pond (not over his head) and he like to get in it also. so the hair will have to come off as much as i am dreading it. |
1 Attachment(s) Here's a pic of Gracie my last Yorkie. I sent her once a month to a groomer who charged me 12.00 (9 years ago) and she looked so pretty. |
I don't know what to say as I like the long hair and it's not really all that much trouble to me, so I have never given any of mine a puppy cut. |

She is just beautiful!!!! Really beautiful!!!!! The price was unbelievable!!!!!!! I'm letting Dudley's hair grow out now. He is almost five yrs old. I have had him in a "snorkie" cut and he is darling in it, but I want to see his coat all grown out. (even if it's wavy) I don't mind the extra work. Dinkey is over a year old and he still doesn't have much hair!!!! So, it will be a long time till his hair grows out. He has a really bad cotton coat. POOR BABY......Love him anyway........ :) |
Thank you all for your quick responses. Patti - I love the picture of your dog - how beautiful!!! You must treasure that picture. Thanks again - Carol Jean |
I don't think I will cut Shelby's hair for awhile, may let it grow out all the way. She has a straight, silky coat and I don't think it would look as good in a puppy cut. Seems like straight silky coats look choppy while curly cotton coats look good short. |
I let my Dudley's hair grow out this past year just to see what he looked like. He was beautiful, of course, but what a mistake for a dog with a sensitive stomach!! He has a lot of diarreah because he gets fed by other well meaning people(not people food) and it seems like all I got done was bathe him. I had him cut short today, and God, he is so darling. We keep Chachis hair short because he has a cotton coat but I would love to see how he would look with his hair grown out. I let Jewels who has a silk coat hair grow and love it. |
I would love for Tiger to grow his hair but it seems like it does not want to do so . . . he's got the slowest growing hair I think. He has never been groomed because I would be truly upset if they chop even a bit of his hair. Since you are lucky to have such a silky coat and easily can grow out . . .why not! You can alway cut it back once you've seen your baby with long hair. Who knows, you might decide to just keep it long for a while especially since he does not matt easily. |
Both our Yorkies are in the modified Schnauzer cut where they still have a short skirt and the hair on the legs is a little longer. Super easy to brush - about a minute! They'll do the face and top of head any way you want it. Ours has the "bear" cut face with no topknot. Just be very precise when you tell the groomer what you want done and what you want it to look like when finished. Good luck! |
We just got Gracie a Westie cut. She has a skirt and the hair on her legs is long. She is gorgeous! We did it because we have been growing her hair for two years and it is only about 4 inches long and cottony and gets matted. We are glad we did it - it is really cute. |
