Choosing a puppy~!
 

It's happy thought all on it's own, isn't it?! :D

Soon I will have the opportunity to choose my puppy from a litter of several. I just realized why I feel so nervous about this! Dogs have always found ME....this will be the first that I'm actually selecting (and paying good money for! ;) ) myself.

I know the general signs of health to look for...and I realize that their personalities do change as they grow, and that in addition, even the most friendly/active dog may be feeling sleepy/grumpy on the day that you meet them.

So with the IT'S ALL A CRAPSHOOT! disclaimer firmly in place....what general features (personality or physical) would YOU look for, if you were going to get to pick out a puppy tomorrow?!

(your fantasy could help inform my real life decision, lol!)

I still want the puppy to choose me. Be attentive and affectionate to me. My husband always tries to match size to what we have at home--so the new one won't be bigger or smaller than the ones at home. Hope this makes sense.

This seems like a good question for the breeders. I am not sure what you look for either. My boyfriend bought me my little girl and she was the first girl yorkie he saw. :)

I choose my Yorkie from three pups. He definitely was the one that came to me the most and wanted to play and be held. He was very friendly and playful.

But - also, I fell in love with his little face. I think that little Yorkies have very different faces, and it was his that melted my heart.

I think if you spend a little time with the litter, it won't take long for you choose one. It just happens. They are many things that will attract you especially to just one little pup. (Remember - you can't take them all home!)

Awwww! You mean, the breeder isn't going to suddenly offer, "Oh heck...take two for the price of one!"?! ;)

I hope I have the same sense of knowing "the one". My husband just sd. something about all yorkie pups looking alike, and I was like, "Whaaaaa-?!" Silly man. :p

the advice here is great! :thumbup: see what puppy comes to you. see which seems most affectionate towards you, and wants to play. dont choose the one is the corner slumping. the one that just melts your heart is always a good pick too! good luck with your descion!

I picked Ness from a litter of six. They were all yelling and crying when they saw new people to play with, but when I walked over to the kennel he was sitting at the back. He wasn't being all emo or anything, just hanging out. I stuck my fingers in and he sniffed them and gave me the "let's play" body language. When I took him out I found out he was the runt but that didn't affect my decision. And since he was the only one not barking and crying at us, I think it is good because I have never heard him bark.

My husband likes to say "Your mommy sure knows how to pick 'em". He said that to our toy poodle and now to Tatum. But the truth is, they picked me. I did look for all the positive healthy signs and all that but when picking Tatum, I was looking at the last female of three different litters, about 9, 10 and 12 weeks old and it was really hard because they were all very affectionate. But while two of them were busy playing with each other, Tatum came over and laid in my lap. That melted me right then and there. Maybe it was because she was the youngest OR maybe she just knew I was her new mommy.

On the other hand, if I would have known all the horror stories I know now, I probably would have still not found the "perfect" one. I didn't know to look at their bite or their back, things like that. I did pass up one really sweet girl that was at a (I now know for certain) nasty breeder's house. Although the puppy was sweet (although a bit stinky), her parents and all the other probably 10-15 Yorkies there in the yard were pretty nappy looking. There's a huge red flag! I knew that much and as much as it killed me, I had to pass her up and drive clear across (or around) Houston to the next stop we wanted to check out. Good thing we did because of things I've learned since then about this lady. Their surroundings should be a pretty good indicator of what you're getting into.

We were actually going to get a maltepoo the day found Ginger. I heard about this litter of three female Yorkanians (Yorkie/Pomeranian). We decided to go take a look at them. The other two were going crazy wanting our attention while Ginger was just sitting in the corner of the x-pen. As soon as I picked her up, she licked my nose and that sealed the deal. Maltewho?? Now our Ginger is such a playful pup without being overly hyper. She's just right for our family.

I definetly agree with you. This Is the way I chose mine. I also say play with all and see wish one is less scared and comes to you. Then make your desicion......

Gracie was the only one where I had a choice. Cali was the last one of her litter, the breeder said they keep the best for last in case they don't sell it. With Gracie there were 4, 2 male and 2 females. I wanted a female and Gracie was the one that came and crawled in my lap the other were jumping all over. I have heard that if they are playful but settle down when you hold them that's a good sign. I think you will know!
