Losing puppy coat? Chloe is now 14 weeks old. She is getting really thin at the top of her head and some of her coat is really shedding. Could it be that she is losing her puppy coat and soon her adult coat will start to grow out? I hope that is all it is. I was looking forward to putting those cute bows in her hair soon. I don't remember this happening to my previous yorkie Lacey when she was this age. |
I hope somebody replys to this thread, because I have the same question. |
Cajungal -- My pup never "lost his puppy coat" and he "never shed." I know that my pup lost his puppy hair because I trimmed/cut it off - not because it came out on its own. My pup's first coat (the one that one that he was born with) was "terrible," It was oily, thin, matted, almost impossible to comb, etc. This is why I got rid of this hair as soon as possible. This hair was totally gone before he was four months old, and he has since sported a new silver/tan coat that is thicker, not oily, and never has a tangle or matt. **** I will never know why my pup's hair was so bad to start with. It was almost like he had been dipped in oil....(I really do wonder if something wasn't put on his coat - even though it wouldn't wash out)......but, anyway, now, he has a coat of hair that I am sure many of you would love your dogs to have. Let's see what others have to say about your puppy shedding..... ***** This is your second Yorkie - do you remember your other Yorkie losing its puppy hair or shedding????? Carol Jean |
There's obviously something amiss here... The transition from puppy coat to adult coat shouldn't be this draumatic. It sounds to me more like a dietary issue OR a genetically poor coat and what you're beginning to see now is what you're going to wind up w/. I'm more inclined to believe that if it's just thinning out of nowhere then you may be looking at either a health issue or a dietary issue. Either look to your vet for any health problems (thyroid and so on) or look to a nutritionalist (typically NOT your vet) for advice on which food is better for your paticular dog. You may be feeding a high quality kibble now, or even may be cooking for him, but if he/she is looking like this then there is something certainly lacking or that he/she is getting too much of! I'd start w/ your vet first. But again, adult coat coming in shouldn't behave like this at all. |
Cajungal - I thought I'd come back and tell you that my pup had very thin hair - especially on the top of his head when I first got him (at 8 weeks). However, now (at 8-9 months), he has a wonderful, thicker (albeit "wavy") coat of air. There is a thread about the Yorkie's Coat on YT - have you read this? I took this from that thread -- it may help you feel better...... -------------------------------------------------------------------- A puppy whose coat appears sparse or thin will, as an adult, have a thick, long coat of the correct fine silky, glossy texture. This coat’s growth is like a human’s hair, in that it is born with very little but by adulthood has an abundance of hair, the quantity having doubled and redoubled all during puppyhood (or childhood). -------------------------------------------------------------------- However - like "YorkieTrainer" --- I don't think your pup should be shedding or losing any hair. You may want to keep an eye on this - or check it out. Again - good luck - Carol Jean |
Yeah, I always heard that they didn't shed much...mine don't. I would get your baby checked out to make sure it is ok too!! I'm sure it is though!! She-Ra had hardly any hair on her head, it was SOOOO thin, but as she matured, it really took off. Harley has had hair from day one, it is getting VERY long. I have never had him groomed though, I just keep him neat and trim occasionally! |
