Raid Well it is that wonderful season and the ants have arrived. I come home tonight to a mass amount in my babys food dish. So I gate of the area where I see them all and spray more raid then was in the can. The oder is pretty strong right now, I have candels lit and window open. Tonight I have to work for a few hours. And he usually stays in the living room/kitchen area and that is where my lil friends were. I am concerned about the smell being to strong once I close the windows. Do you think I should leave him in my bedroom? I hate locking him in one room but I dont want him to get sick from the smell! Also if anyone knows how to rid these ants it would be appreciated...lol |
You should definitely use something non-toxic. I know ants are a real pain!!! I got something that works very well - it's Victor Poison Free Ant and Roach killer - I may have gotten it home depot - I can't remember! It's a very strong mint spray that kills them on contact - but it is non-poisonous. What you really need to do is find the source of the ants. If they are coming in from the outside, then treat the foundation of your house so that they do not come in. You can use orange oil or diatamaceous earth - both found at nurseries that sell organic products. On your counter tops you can use a bait such as a borax and mint jelly. The ants will eat it and die. BUT it is toxic to our babies so you cannot let it fall off the counter tops. I got some bait for sweet eating ants (the little tiny ones that get on the cabinet and in the pantry) at home depot. It looks like a clear liquid that you put a few drops on paper and put the paper on the counter tops and in the pantry and the ants eat it and the borax in the solution will kill them. It's very important to not use toxins around your babies. Oh and I would definitely NOT leave him in the enclosed area with the smell of raid - it could make him sick or burn his lungs. |

I am fighting the ant battle right now also. It never ends. I think my house is on top of a huge ant hill. They come up through every odd little crack or crevace they can find. Every time I stop them they find a new way in a day or two later. Anyway, about the dog food bowl....I put the dog food bowl inside of a larger shallow bowl with water in it so the dog food is surrounded by water. Doesn't solve the ants in the house issue but keeps them out of the dogs food. |

There's a dog dish that I saw at Petco or Petsmart that is "Ant Proof." Don't know if it works, but it's worth a try if the water idea doesn't work. :D |
ants; what pests! what i did was i surrounded the interior of my doggy proof room with a thin fencing. i left enough space between the fencing and the wall so i can place a ant bait around the room (i currently have four, 2 close to doggy food source) i positioned the baits enough where my doggies can not reach it even if they tried to paw through the fence. hopefully it works; i certainly don't want my doggies eating ants! and hope everyone solves the ant problems! :) |
A method for getting rid of ants is start with equal amounts of baking soda and icing sugar, if they take that fine if not cut back on the soda a little bit till they finally start to take it. Do not kill them then because what they do is take it back to the hive and feed it to the queen. What happens is they can not dispell gas so they end up blowing up. It works!!!!Good Luck |

What is "icing sugar"? Is that different from granulated or regular table sugar? |

I was going to suggest for the future, put the dog dish inside a saucer that has water in it. I've had to do this before and the ants would not get in the water to get the food. They got the hint and went elsewhere. |
Icing sugar is what you make icing out of for a cake! lol :wink2: |
Icing Sugar=confectionary sugar I think. |
