Hartz ? Now that the weather is warming I want to use some protection for Diezel to prevent flees and ticks. I want to do this today since he is going to get groomed tomorrow morning. My question is when any if any of you use this does your baby act weird and run around like you just tortured him? I did this once before last year and I swore he was going to hide from me forever. I am terrible at things like this even tho I know its for the better... |
Please don't use the Hartz products. They can be deadly to your yorkie and other pets. Take a minute and google the word hartz and you will read thousands of horror stories. I used it ONCE on my cats....one kitty was foaming at the mouth and shaking his head. I know he didn't ingest it, so I did a search on it and was amazed at what I read. I immediately washed it off him Frontline or advantage are much safer, not only safer, but they're more effective too. You just place it between your dogs shoulder blades....doesn't seem to bother them at all. |

I do NOT have Hartz. I have frontline. It was giving to me from the Vet. So I guess my questions applys to the Frontline treatment. Is this going to make him bug out and seem to bother him when I put it on? I can't stand seeing him act like something is bother him but I hate more to see him scratching like he is digging for china! Thanks for the first info also! |
I have used front line on katy since she was 2 1/2 months old. She has never had a problem with it. I like frontline over K9 because it will kill any larvae. K9 has the mosquito control. But since Katy doesn't stay outside all day, I thought has the flea larvae protection was better. |
I use Frontline on all my babies and I have one who does what you described- she runs around the house freaking out and acting "paranoid" for hours after I give her a treatment. I really hate giving her a treatment for that reason. I have tried other products and she reacts the same way. I even tried splitting the dose in two- that didn't make a difference. Whenever I have tried other products I have found fleas and/or ticks on my dogs- so I stick with the Frontline. I figure if she is going to react that way no matter what, might as well use what I feel works the best. By the way, this last time I gave her a treatment, immediately afterward that I took her for a walk to "distract her". That seemed to work- when we got back home about 45 minutes later she seemed to be acting like her normal self. So I have to wonder if it is a chemical reaction to the Frontline, or just her being upset/nervous because she can feel it and not rub it off... |

Also, I think it bothers because they can feel it. You know that feeling when we put color on our hair and you feel it dripping and you cant scratch it.. hehe I think it might be the same feeling |
Sometimes Bailey acts strange when I put his flea med on, I have asked my vet, cause It seems like it burns or affects him somehow, he gets all skiddish and won't come to me,, but about 1-2 hours later it is forgotten, and it doesnt happen every time I apply it, I don't know what it is... But there is no burn or reaction, just him acting weird. |

My vet told me that he didn't feel like I should put it on a freshly bathed dog- he said to wait a day or two after their bath before applying. (that way they get some natural oil built back up again on their skin) So we always give bathes two days before it's time to treat again. As far as harnessing goes after treatment- as soon as she sees her leash, all is forgotten! All she is concerned with is getting in her harness and gettin' goin"! :p Is he harness the style where you can put it on, then apply the treatment? Also, since you have a grooming appointment you may want to wait for a day or two after that to apply the Frontline. It says on their web site that it takes 24 hours to "spread", so you may not want to wash it off right away. |

DID IT! and he was fine... put it on went for a walk and it was easy as that. Thanks for the advice. He isnt going to the groomer until tomorrow so he just over 24 hours. It shouldnt take to long to cover his tiny little body :animal36 |

HARTZ is TERRIBLE! "Please don't use the Hartz products. They can be deadly to your yorkie and other pets. Take a minute and google the word hartz and you will read thousands of horror stories." The level of carcinogens in all Hartz products are amaizing! They're alkaline level is really high too! Quite the poisonous product. I'd wash it off and wash it off fast and don't be surprised if his hair is slightly died at the sight of application(s). You should really spend the extra money to get a better grade flea proventative! Oh, not to mention the practises this company takes to test them on animals before the product even hits the shelf! I don't buy anything-not even toys or treats that come from that company! |

I have checked the area and there is no reddness or any signs of irritation. If it continues I will def call the Vet... I am good for that, they know me very well  |
Frontline you say? Well, I try not to use flea proventative on my Yorkie lol, yeah it sounds like she may have been simply irritated w/ the smell or maybe the feeling of just having a liquid like that sticking w/ her all day. No worries if there isn't any redness; if she's not lethargic; foaming at the mouth...I'd guess that she's fine. |
Lil Bear only had problems if I use Frontline Plus on her. Now that I have Frontline TopSpot, she doesn't get the redness and irritation Moose does what you describe. She will run, bark, rub her face and back in carpet, and will not have anything to do with me for an hr or so. I have explained it is to protect her from yucky fleas but I don't think she cares michelle, moose, and lil bear |
I honestly believe a large part of this is the smell of the chemical that the dogs dislike and are trying to avoid. That's assuming that there aren't any symptoms for an allergic reaction. Have you ever just opened an applicator and let them smell it before you use it? Watch what they do! Try this on a dog who has never even had it on them before. Interesting. |
flea protection My Petey is on Revolution. It protects him against all the same things as frontline as well as heartworms. He never acts too skiddish when it's time to put it on, he just doesn't like the smell to much. I can imagine it's a really strong smell to their little noses. |
I use revolution it covers more and I like in better than advantage and frontline, they are considered a insecticide or pesticide I cant remember, and revolution is not, it also covers american dog tick, ear mites, heartworm, and sarcoptic mange. |

Morning YTer's! Several years ago I used a vet chem product, that I got from my vet, on one of my cats. She freaked! started foaming from the mouth and ran around the house like she was on fire! I had to wash her immediately. I don't like putting chemicals on my little Sadie Mae so, I tried all kinds of natural products. I even bought one of those flea discs that you can get from Foster and Smith....didn't work. Well, my furbaby had fleas...As much as I didn't want to I had to give in and try something..being so small I was afraid of her getting anemic (sp?) I wouldn't say she was full of fleas but just a few are to many for a small animal. I had to finally give in and try something else, I spoke to my vet and he had suggested frontline or advantage. I was a little nervous about the fronline as I have heard some not so good stories. I spoke with some of my yorkie friends and they use Advantage so, I started using that...Sadie didn't have any reactions to it at all and she did fine. I stop using it when flea season is over...I will be starting up again soon. But, I would DEFINATELY stay away from anything you can buy in the stores.. OH! and HAPPY EASTER ALL MY YT FRIENDS! |
