Fleas on Baby Yorkies??? Hi Everyone! I just noticed a little tiny black bug-thing on my 8 week old baby girl's leg and it ran. Does that mean she has fleas? I've never seen fleas before. I have not seen any on her brother. We've only had our puppies 4 days, and they haven't been anywhere so they must've come from the breeder. :( What do I do? I looked at the PetShop near our house and all the shampoo/bath type products said not to use on puppies 12 weeks and under and so did the drop products that you put on the back of their necks. There was a Hartz flea collar that said you could put it on them at 6 weeks, but I didn't know if it would be safe. Has anyone treated their puppies this little. Romeo, the littlest one is very small, about the height of a coke can, what could I use on him (sorry I don't know his weight)? I'd appreciate any advice. |
Fleas We give our Yorkie Sentinal in a pill form twice a year and it works great. |
sounds like a flea...I'm not sure about treatment, hopefully someone else will know..occasionally I find a single flea on my dog, which I pick off and keep searching for more, never find any...does she scratch a lot? You can by a flea comb at PetSmart that has really fine and closely-placed teeth and brush down her back towards the base of the tail and see what you find :( |
My vet sprayed some flea spray on some cotton and then wiped it all over her because she was so little. It did the trick and the fleas were gone! |
I remember when i brought Oreo home.. had fleas too! he was only 8 weeks then... i remember using the flea collar but that was no use! so i gave him a flea bath and that worked.. thankfully he didn't get sick/catch a cold! :D |
fleas When I got my Yorkie at 6 weeks old, he was covered in fleas too. My vet told me to bath him in Lemon Joy dishwashing liquid. It worked great. I bathed him the night I got him and again the next morning and all of the fleas were gone. I would do that and then when he is 8-10 weeks I think you can start him on the Advantege. :aimeeyork |
Hi Tara! You must be having so much fun with your new babies! Have you had them to the vet yet? The vet would know how to treat fleas at this age and they will weigh the puppies for you too. |
I have a 9 week old puppy and the vet gave me advantage for it. You put it on the back of the neck. He said to only put 1/2 of it on though. |
I use frontline and i recomend it....you can use the spray which is safe even for very young puppies! |
fleas Please, No flea collars ever on a Yorkie, especially a puppy. I had one pup chew the flea colar of another pup years ago and it nearly died, sometimes the pup can even get the collar caught under the bottom jaw and it is so toxic..bathe them both and use a puppy safe spray..and watch for tapeworms..comes from swallowing a flea. |
Thanks for the Advice Hi Everyone, Thanks for all the great advice. :) I'm glad I posted before trying to "treat" them. SoCal -- I am waiting to take them to the vet since they have an appointment to go next week (to get their shots). I'm really interested to see what the little one weighs, he is so tiny!! In the meantime, I plan to do as YorkieRose suggested and bathe them (I don't know with what yet  ) and then get the spray that is safe for puppies (I don't know which one that is  )I will go to PetSmart this afternoon to see what I can find. Thanks again to everybody for being so nice and caring and for the wealth of information! I'm glad to have people I can turn to when I have questions. |

Try this Alot of my pomeranian breeder friends use talcom (baby powder). Give them a bath, blow dry and them put baby powder all over. I think it smothers the fleas......not sure if it also acts like baking soda (where the bugs ingest it and when it drinks liquid, it explodes from the expansion of the baking soda) Seems to work and is safe. |
