Can a yorkie pup overwalk? Miss Mini and I have been walking together we are up to about a half a mile ,after our walk today she was ready for a nap ..hehe i tired her little yorkie butt out anyway when she got up shes been kinda limping ..at least it seems to be a favoring of her back legs ,she didnt do anything out of the ordinary no jumps leaps or things like that and i was just wondering if she could of tired herself out from overwalking ???? Any ideas ...please share ...I am not to worried but am a new mom ya know and need a little mother chat ~ thanks in advance :) |
How old is she? I started walking Cali recently and today she did a bout 3/4 of a mile but she is 10 months old and we worked up to it slowly. It could be she is just sore, but ii would watch her and see if it happens again and have the vet check her out. |

I'm also curious if you can walk them too far? Wouldn't they just plop their little ole' patootie down or want you to carry them if they got tired? |
My little man, Rocky, and I walk about a mile on the days I don't go to the gym. When he does not feel like walking any more or he gets tried, he lays down without any warning. I than have to carry his little butt back home. Thankfully he only ways 4.9 lbs. |
No I don't think that is too much for her, but I suppose it may differ dog to dog. When Annie was small we lived in Jersey City so we would go into NYC or along the river (NJ side) and she would walk miles without any problems. I even trained for a 5K last summer and she trained with me some days. Her birthday is in June. So at that time she wasn't even one and she did absolutely fine! I would be dead by the time we got home, but she would be like aww mommy are we done! :D Now that we are suburban folks she has become a grandma, I can't even take her around the block without her plopping her butt on the ground :rolleyes: |
When i got my lab pup the vet said not to walk too far in 1st year when they are growing as its not good for their hips, sopose it would be the same for any pup |
I dont know! I would think that if they got tired they would sit down and not want to walk anymore! |
I have heard that it is not good to walk long distances while your pup is still growing. I am not sure about yorkies but most definitely for larger breeds (this is discussed often on a boxer forum I go to). I take my yorkies for walks but do not go further than a couple of blocks, if it will be longer I don't take Daisy or I carry her often due to her injury on her leg at 10 weeks, I don't want to risk any stress or pain to her. |
Silly ...woof woof says Queen Lily!!! :) Since we have smaller babies they get tired easily with those short wee lil legs!!! LOL :p and they burn energy faster and they're delicate they sometimes get hurt just by walking..... :( hope this helps you!!! Queen Lily :aimeeyork & Mommy Lene :animal-pa |
I have been taking my little Sasha for walks since her first year. Around the lake is about 2 mi and around the park is the same. I think she would keep on trucking- if I let her-but I have noticed that when we get home she is really tired that day and the next. So I am carefull- to pick her up for part of the walk and not to take her beyond. She is so anxious to please- and she loves smelling all the other dogs- also- she seems to want to keep up with all the big dogs- and does not want me to carry her! I just keep my walks a little shorter- and then we just sit and watch the other dogs go by!! She likes that too! Have fun! Sashas Mum |
Yesterday I took Jaci to the park and let him run around off his leash {fenced in area} he just loved it! When we got home he took a nap and when he woke up was very quiet and laying around. So I think the walk and run wore him out. He is almost 5 mo. It was not untill late at night that he started playing and acting like his normal bad little self. So I dont think I will let him run around for such a long time in the near future. No limping though. Maybe your little baby was tired out and had sore foot pads. I hope Miss Mini is all better! |
When Daisy and I walked when she was younger she would just sit down and refuse to walk any longer when she got tired... Now, she can out walk me!! LOL |
:dogwalk: Miss Mini is fine today after some good long rests shes back to her ole self .I talked to a family friend whos a paleontologist he said Mini was just sore like we get sore if we over exert , he said there muscles and bones are simular to ours and work the same .I am glad i know this so I will still walk her and get her use to the long haul but in baby steps till she can do it without hurting herself .She loves to walk and I know it will be good for us both :dogwalk: :dogzzz: :2hearts2: |
My baby is 1 year. I just started walking him more now with the warmer weather. He is a machine. I am guilty of circling the block a few time extra because he is just not done. I would think he would be tired due to the fact he does a serious "hop" when we first get outside and tries running (at least 10 minutes of this) and then as excited he gets when other people walk by (he loveeees everyone) but he never gets tired. The only time he lays down is when we get to the front door and he does not want to come in. Good thing I am bigger then him :D |
