Ears! Hi ladies, I know a lot of people have posted about this, but my Bella is almost 16 weeks old. I just got her ears shaved (for standing) last weekend...they didn't cut that much though. They are standing a little bit, but still flopping at the top. I waited so long because I just loved her floppy ears and wanted to keep them as long as possible, but now I'm ready for them to stand. Did I wait too long??? I hope it's not too late for them to stand. I know some people say that they will stand on their own, but do you think I should tape them? If so, does anyone have exact directions on how to do this? Thanks so much ;) |
I think you still have a bunch of time before its too late! My Lillys stood when she was 6 months old. The ears need to be shaved 1/3 down from the top (completly shaved to the skin) If they don't stand on their own by 5 months old I would start taping. Good luck. |
Sometimes it takes a couple of days before they pop up entirely. Ramsey's are both up, but one still has a tiny crease at the top. If you want to tape them...you have to do both. Take surgerical tape, press it on your hand a couple of times, that'll help not to pull their hair out when you remove it, fold one ear together, wrap, fold the other, wrap, take tape and wrap both together. It doesn't have to stay in long, a couple of days. HTH |
Get 'em up! Taping ears to stand erect is an art and therefore should be done by someone skilled other wise you can wind up w/ kinked or dented ears and so on. I personally would have them taped at this point. The ears should have been shaved, not quite w/ a surgical blade, but one up from that so that there is next to nothing there...they should feel velvety w/, like I said...no long hair at all. Just low enough to cover the skin and that's it! As she gets older you can allow more growth on the ear, but for now imo you should take off as much as you can handle and just cope w/ her looking goofy for a few weeks while those ears are encouraged to follow their genetic lead. She encroaching on the age where you should give it a few days yet and see what they do, and if they're not rising, take her to someone (vet, breeder...) who is experienced w/ taping! |
Ears 3 Attachment(s) Hi, When I got my Lexy at 8 weeks old her ears were down. I then shaved them and taped them with surgical tape. I put each end of one ear together and taped it then the other. I then took masking tape because it was sturdier and placed it on top so there was a bar between both ears it only took 3 days and once I took the tape off they were sticking straight up. I have sent you 3 pictures one at 8 weeks, one at 12 weeks and one at a year old which was last week on the 4th of April. This really works and Lexy is there to prove it. At first she felt uncomfortable but they are puppies and she was just fine with it. |
I shave the top third of the ear on both sides. Then I cut little squares of masking tape and put a piece on each side. Then i put a little folded up piece between the ears going across the top and attaching to each ear. It looks like they have a little tiara on or nurses cap. Even tho the top third is what's shaved, put the tape on the who;e ear. it will roll up a little at the bottom but won't come off and doesn't seem to bother them. |
I've been cleaning the hair off Abbie's ears from about 10weeks. They popped right up the day after the first cleaning! However, I've been told that sometimes they may flop again when baby teeth are lost....??? |
LEXI is of a nice type! Where did you get her? She reminds me of the transition the breed made from terrier to "toy". Pretty girl. :) |
Thanks everyone for your responses! I don't think that my groomer took enough hair off of her ears...even though she cut her WAAYYY too close everywhere else...go figure:) Anyhow, I will be taking her back to get a closer cut on the ears and will find someone to tape her asap! Thanks again, you guys are great...as usual:0) |
Hi, I got Lexy from a friend who had a male and female. Unfortunately Lexy is a little big 10 lbs to be exact but cute. Her Mom is 16 lbs and her Dad is 6 lbs. The puppies ranged from 4 lbs to 16 lbs. I guess she is a good size cause I don't have to worry that she is to fragile but her body is long and her legs aren't that long. I am for New York. Hopefully when Lexy goes into her second heat I will be able to mate her. I can't believe she just turned a year old and hasn't been in her first heat. I have asked and I was told to wait. |

Don't worry too much about ears looking "choppy" because you cut the hair off yourself. It grows back SOOOOO quickly. It really weighs those puppy ears down. Don't tape unless you know what you are doing. I saw a person tape the ears "backward" once. I was like "WHAT are you DOING??!?" and we untaped and taped them the right direction (both ears did stand up). It is not too late. You can get them up. Did both parents have their ears up? Some won't go up no matter what you do. I've never had a pup not have their ears up by 8 weeks (because I start taking the hair off of them early on). |
