I'm getting a second yorkie and here is my reason:

My furby needs to have a dog companion, not just human companion. There are times when "people" in her life can't give her the full attention as before. For example, later in life I will start a family of my own and have a human child or two. By then, she would be SOOO depressed because Mom's attention has shifted. I would never want to see her in that stage.

If she had a second yorkie (maybe even a third...lol), they'd be able to keep each company and wouldn't have a rely on "people" to give her attention. By the time my family starts, she wouldn't be that stressed.

Oh yeah, I'd think it's inevitable that she'd be jealous at first and be territorial. There's nothing wrong with that. She'd grow accustomed to the second yorkie. Before you know it, they are best friends and can't be separated.

I can see where everyone here is all gung-ho about more yorkies no matter what, but keep in mind that you are the one who knows Mickey best. My 7-year old, Pivo, has been an only dog for the past 6 years. We had a chow-chow when we got him and he loved her to death.

Now Pivo still lives with my parents and I live in another state. When I went home this past weekend I brought my baby yorkie with me (13 weeks). Pivo was okay but not very happy about him the first night, then the next day when my boyfriend and I went shopping and left the baby home with Pivo and my parents, he freaked out! I guess he thought we had left him there permanently. He growled and tried to bite, not only Ness (the baby), but my parents and brother, too.

He is the sweetest little guy but another dog is just not in the cards for that house at the moment. Also keep in mind that with two dogs, I hear that they'll pay more attention to each other and not have the same attachment to you that they once had.

Probably the best thing to do would be to find out if you can bring the/a puppy home for a couple of days and see how Mickey reacts. Their personalities are as, if not more, varied than humans'. Let us know when there are any updates!

Thanks everyone. I'll take all the info you gave me and mull it over before making my final decision.

If you mix a female dog with a male dog, they will get along better than 2 male dogs or 2 female dogs would. If they are the opposite sex, they should be fine.

After all, one could be yours and the other could be your parents!*!

For the time being we decided against getting a second Yorkie.

Details.... He is amazingly beautiful!!! Only 7 weeks old and a GREAT, GREAT, GREAT personality. Loves licking us already! Initially, Mickey was happy to see him... but once Mickey realized that he was not just a guest, he changed. He seems to be afraid of him and is cautious around him. Plus, Mickey sleeps with me, so he didn't like it when I put the new little guy in bed with us (I didn't let him sleep with us mostly because he's just soooo small right now). I really hope Mickey gets used to him and doesn't get jealous. The thing that worried me and still does is that Mickey is used to being the boss of the house. There are certain things that might make him feel like second fiddle. So far we are giving Mickey extra attention so he doesn't feel upset or anything like that.

BTW, how do I change the title in this post?

I too am considering a second yorkie, but want a female. Is it possible to have 2 females. I was told they would be territorial and might kill one another. That is the only thing stopping me. My yorkie lives with 2 toy poodles, but she is the alpha dog. Even though they were here first. She is treated differently. I watched my friends pup over night once and Baby would not even look at her or me. She stayed in her tent.

Congrats!!!! I am so happy for you. I know exactly how you feel I too am considering a new pup, but don't want to emotionally hurt my 2.5 year old yorkie. I probably won't get one for that reason. Look forward to hearing how everything turns out.

Dogs love having dogs to play with. There is always a period of adjustment, but that is normal. Once they get to know each other, they will get along fine.

I wonder if some of your concern isn't that you are afraid your first dog will not need you as much, so rather than the dog being jealous, it might actually be yourself that ends up being jealous. Now that is s more realistic possibility.

That's an intersting thought -- being a psychology buff makes me appreciate when people think this way ;) -- but I don't think that's it. I am really worried about him first and foremost. He's my son! :D
