Hawk   Hello You wont believe this. I remember just a few days ago the predator warnings that you shared. And because we live in the country with several acres of woods and lakes, I realized I had to keep a even closer eye on casey than I allready was. Thank goodness I was because I walked out with him sun morning and as I did I spotted a huge hawk. It was hunting near the lake, they love big frogs and snakes.. well he flew away. I thought. Then I walked over to the big willow tree just to realize he was right above us. Wow.. I really never thought it would be that close. This guy was probably the biggest hawk I have ever seen up here. As he flew over you could see his full wing span and hear the sound of his wings fan against the air. He had a huge wing span. I would guess that it was close to 4 ft. No kidding! I scooped up casey and came inside. As I told my husband about what had just happened he reminded me that since we live so close to the wabash river we also have a golden eagle population as well. Man I still cant get over this happening right after I was talking with you guys. So everybody please dont take your eyes off these guys for a minute. I have seen these big birds catch something in a blik of a eye almost. I love to watch the birds they are majestic and beautiful. I believe that they are even sacred. (native american, my background) However I dont want my little lion to be lunch. |
 Thank goodness Casey has a vigilent Mom!!! That is something that we fear ... when we are camping we always watch out for predators! If one ever grabs Toto he better be prepared to lift 134 lbs!! 4 lb. of Toto plus 130 lbs of me!!! :D We are always being accused of being "over-protective" of Toto!! :o Ask me if I care?? Rather be over-protective than have to relay stories about the sweet little Yorkie that "we used to have"!! ;) |
tiny Yorkies are no match There is a real danger from large birds. Certainly hawks, eagles and owls are capable of lifting a 5 lb yorkie....they carry rabbits, etc....so a yorkie would fit right into that weight range. You have to watch these little guys like, (pardon the reference) hawks.....they are defenseless against larger animals, whether feathered, furred or humans. You are a protective mom...... Max's mom |
I am soo glad you were there to protect your little Yorkie. Your poor little guy probably never even realized he was being watched by a hungry bird. Don't know about Max, but my Sadie is still so puppy like she would never see it coming. Good for Max having his mommy always around. |
Unfortunately there have been many small dogs taken by large birds, coyotes, wolves, and other prey animals, so the best thing you can do is to be outdoors with them and if walking in a wildlife area, make sure you have your little ones on a leash. There was one taken a few years back while walking with the human, but was 40 or 50 feet in front and was grabbed by a coyote. The man was heartbroken because he could not catch the coyote and his precious little pal was gone. We have to remember that yorkies, chi's, and other toy dogs are not much bigger than the rabbits that are hunted all the time by prey animals. |
Yup, as alert as Yorkies are, it'd be hard for them to spot a hawk swooping down at top speed! Being overly protective sure has its rewards! :) |
I worry about this when we go to our lake cabin that is out in the country but never thought much about it here in the city. Last year a neighbor told me that we have a hawk in our neighborhood. I couldn't belive it until I saw it for myself. I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex and never thought you would find a hawk in this area. So be very careful and keep your eyes open! |
