You will not believe that this works Tucker has been driving me to distraction with his barking. I tried everything, the water bottle (he loved getting hit in the face, the little monster), the pennies in a can, which made him bark at the can, yelling, clapping....nothing worked. Well, guess what works, every time! I WHISPER! When he starts to bark I softly say "Tucker" and he looks at me. Then I start whispering "no bark, shhhhh, too noisy, no bark" And I SWEAR to you he stops every time! He comes over to me and I pet him and tell him it's ok, no bark. Hopefully eventually he'll just stop when I say no bark, but this is such a huge improvement that I'll be happy if this just works forever. :animal-pa |
I will have to try that. Sophie is bad to bark when people come over. It is not an aggressive bark she just gets so excited. It is funny what will work with these little boogers. Thanks for the tip. |
Wow, I must try that,, if he can hear me,, he's so LOUD! |
when Remmy gets out of control i do "SHHHHH" and he always stops immediately. I never trained him to do this he just does it. |

I whispered to Gracie as a pup because I wanted her to pay close attention to me while we were training... now she has super-sonic hearing and can hear me whisper her name from another room... |
How funny is that! I might have to try it someday when my girls are being noisy! |
He was probably thinking, why is she squirting me with water and shaking a noisey can at me.....All she had to do is tell me to stop barking softly and I'd listen...hahahaha. He is too smart for the dog stuff, just talk to him like a human. |
I need to try that!!! Fingers crossed it works for Ella too. I am using the water spray at the moment but she is too clever and knows where it is kept so she will bark in other places. |
Thank you for the suggestion!! I will be sure to try this on my little loudmouth!! :D I do the pennies in a can thing and Nikko hates it but many times hubby winds up getting scared out of his wits too!! :D This would be a much easier and less scary way to shut Nikko up. I hope it works!! |
I need to try that because Jake looses his mind when the door bell rings. |

I read today that when they stop barking you should say "Good quiet!" |

LOL Too funny!!! I do that with Princess, she will stop and run right to me it's so funny. I can whisper anything, and she can't stand it. She gets really quiet so she can hear me. It be sad if she missed out on a shopping trip because she's barking up a storm. :) :) :) |
Teri88, I totally agree with you. I hear people screaming at their children and their dogs all the time --- trying to effect some sort of behavior -- and this never works. Of course, if we're loud -- our children and dogs are going to be louder. I am also very quiet with my dogs when I try to get them to do something. If my pups starts barking a little more than I like. I just pick him up, and say, "Murphy, what in the world are you doing -- move him and get him interested in something else" ....or something like this. I do this in a "normal voice" and sometimes even more quieter than that. Again, I totally agree with you that if we want our dogs to be quiet - we certainly need to set that example. Carol Jean |
When you yell at your barking dog, the dog thinks that you're barking right along with it. The whispering is a great idea. Also, if you can train your dog to bark on command, you can also train him/her to be quiet on command. We tried this with our yap happy mixed terrier and it worked! It didn't take long for her to learn to 'speak' and to be 'quiet'. Of course there had to be treats involved! :) |
I will have to try that also. Tike barks all the time. When he is playing, hear any thing at all, He barks sometimes just to bark. |
I'll try whispering. That's a good idea. I've been making Susan come and sit down in front of me. It breaks the cycle and distracts her. But I think it sort of scares her and makes her think she's doing something awful because as soon as I let her break the sit she leaps into my arms and starts licking my face like she's desperate to get on my good side again. |
