difference between cotton or silky I am a little confused on the cotton/silky coat thing. I was wondering if someone could explain to me what a cotton coat might feel like. I have heard of being able to distinguish between the two by the red eye/green eye when taking photos, but I swear my Yorkie is a cotton coat and her eyes appear green in her photos. Her hair feels pretty dry feeling to the touch and mats very easily. I don't even like to keep a collar around her neck due to massive tangling and matting underneath it. And does a cotton coat mean their not a "true purebred" Yorkie or what? I hate her hair!!! Love her but not her hair. Thanks Everyone!! |
My Gracie (RUP) was a silky as they come, but a collar or sweater would make her mat too! If your Yorkie has a cottony coat...don't even try to let it grow long! Just keep her in a puppy cut or a Scnauzer cut. Scruffy (RIP) had cottony hair and looked precious in his little Schnauzer cut! Too soon to tell if Miss Lexy is going to be silky or not, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she is! |
nala has a cottony coat but it doesn't really get matted. her legs might get a couple of knots in them every now and then. i wanted to grow her hair out a little bit just b/c i think the long hair is pretty but she seems like she gets hot really easy so i'll probably end up getting it cut short. do any of your dogs hair the "funky bedhead hair" that's what i call it, lol. for example if you were to take some of their hair and stand it up does it stay like that until you comb it down? nala's is like that.it really looks bad in the mornings when she first gets up |
At what age can you pretty much tell which they are going to be? Hefner's still seems like a puppy coat and he is 6.5 months. |
A cotton coat is usually fuller and generally feels warm to the touch and very soft. A silky coat has a cooler, smoother feel to the back of your hand. One way to tell is look at it in the light. Silky coats reflect the light, cottony coats although clean and may shine do not reflect. Silky coats almost look metallic. The eye sheen is a good general rule but I have seen the camera flash different colors on both. A flashlight in a dark room would be more accurate I think. |
My rambo's hair was i guess cottony and looked like he had a bad perm but the with proper care that i have been giving him using the right shampoo and conditioner ,combing and making sure it doesn't get all knotted up i keep it on the longer side and he seems to be doing just fine. |
