A dilemna: Vacation/camping in June I am struggling with something and I just don't know what to do about it. Mayzie is 5 months old this coming Sat. When I got her I just assumed that I would be taking her with us on our vacation. We go to the beach and Camp at a campground for a week. My problem is that I am scared to death of her getting stolen when I have to leave her. We have a pop up camper so even if the door is locked...duh undo the velcro and you're in! There are times that I will not be able to take her with me. At that time of the year dogs are not permitted on the beach/boardwalk. I have 2 kids (9 and13) and so we do different things during the day since this is our vacation. The people that we camp next two and have been for the last 7 years bring their 2 dogs but they are big and they have a huge crate that they lock and there is no way that anybody is going to pick up that cage and throw it in their vehicle. I am running out of ideas of people to ask to sit with her that week. I do have one option but my husband is not real comfortable with it because if Mayzie darts out their door (which she does here) she will be on a deadly highway (nicknamed "highway to heaven" no kidding). I hate the thought of a kennel--actually it's just out of the question-I would rather just stay home than that. What would/do any of you campers do in this situation? |
Could you maybe put her in a crate with the big dogs while you are gone?? ( I hope I understood that right.) |
I dont know what to tell you! I dont know how I will ever go on vacation again! I cant stand the thought of leaving my girls! |
Oh my goodness no--I think the one would use her for a chew toy. :( and also we don't keep the same schedule so our neighbors might already be gone when we are ready to go anywhere and their crate would be locked. The other problem I have is Mayzie isn't crated so for me to crate her then I am afraid she will bark and bark and get us kicked out :thumbdown |

The thought of me leaving her behind is just unbearable! I know exactly what your saying! It was easy when I got her because I just assumed she would be going with me but..... |
MOst beaches allow dogs they just have to be on leashes. Are you sure the beach forbids dogs? You could set her up under the umbrellla with some water and she would be fine. Also if you are camping you guys might grill out so you wouldn't have to leave her to go in a restraunt. I am tring to rack my brain here. Are there any local boarding place near your vaction spot you could drop her off at for a few hours as needed, like if you were to go to the aquarium or something? |
[QUOTE=Thorsmomma]MOst beaches allow dogs they just have to be on leashes. I just double checked the city ordinances and it clearly states NO dogs on beach or boardwalk between May 1 and Sept 30. This stinks! I have been doing some digging on the net and I found a place that offers daycare for 15 1/2 day or 20 for the whole day. I am just nervous about this. I know I have to decide something......<sigh> :( |
Hi - Have you looked for an independent dog sitter? Not a kennel. I found one ( I live in Los Angeles) at Petco where the postings are... Also, what about another trusted yorkie owner? Family? I feel your pain! Leaving them is so hard! We haven't been camping since we've gotten Preston but we have stayed at dog friendly hotels. It's hard but not impossible. Good luck! |
how much does she weigh? Maybe a doggie stroller or carry on bag? |
if this is a vacation spot 90% of the time they will overlook ur pup if it is small enough because of the business..... I would just take her if you can't leave her & I'm sure they will let her in places, just use a puppy carrier.... |
