Licks her Paws My girl licks her paws, everyday, like a cat. Is this normal, or some indication of a problem? She is so cute when she sleeps, as she is all curled up in a ball, just like a cat. I used to have cats, and she is smaller than anyone of them. Yorkies rule! Thanks everyone. Kate |
I have heard this could be allergies but unless she is itching and scratching I would not worry. |
I'd say it was just a part of the grooming ritual. However, if it's constand licking, chewing, that could be a nervous condition. |
I do think yorkies act alot like cats. My yorkie is named Kitty because we couldn't come up with a name for her so my hubby started saying "here kitty, kitty" so she thought that was her name. :) |

ya know, ive wondered that about Daisy. She is a very itchy dog..but she is constantly biting/licking her paws! And with teh post I just made on her anxiety, I wonder.... |
Punkin licks at her paws every morning after going out for her morning pee. I have always attributed it to her daiy grooming. I hope that is all it is. She does it for a good 5 minutes or so and that seems to be it for the day. |
I have a Bichon that licks his paws often - and, he works hard to remove any leaves or other things that stick to them from being outside. He is just trying to stay clean - and it has never been a problem. However - licking and chewing are two different things. Some dogs will "chew," their paws - and this can lead to a lot of different problems. I would see a vet for this and see if there aren't any allergies causing this behavior. Good luck! Carol Jean |
I would have the vet take a look at her just to be safe..I had a dog one time that did that and she had to be treated..but for the life of me I can't remember now what the vet called it...it's been so long ago..but i do remember one thing..the vet says they do that because it itches.. |
Thanks everyone for your replies. Sadie does have allergies, but not bad. When they really act up, I give her 1/4 tablet of Children's Benedryl per my vet. She usually does this maybe once or twice a day, for about five mins. I think she is just cleaning herself, as I don't see where she chews. But, I will mention this to my vet when she goes in to see the vet in three weeks for her annual shot. Many thanks.l |
my moms teacup , remy, is a major paw licker. she has an allergy problem and is now on allergy meds. she is better now. |
Trixie did this for a while...to the point that she would wake me up in the middle of the night licking them! We called the vet and they said it was probably allergies and before bringing her in to 1) make sure her nails weren't overgrown and poking her (which they weren't) and to 2) try changing her food first. Change her food, she stopped within a day or so. Also, make sure she hasn't walked on a freshly mopped floor or sprayed lawn or a flowerbed w/ pine mulch/bark...they treat mulch to prevent if from becoming infested while in a bag on the shelf and they could have a reaction to the chemical used. (I would have never thought of this, I was very glad they pointed it out.) :) |
