My dog wants to eat grass..should I give him spinach instead? My yorkie Brutus every now and then has this insatiable desire to go outside and eat grass, spider plants, you name it. But it is every now and then, so I heard before that if a dog acts like that, they want some sort of green to help their tummy. So, instead of letting him eat the grass, I had some baby spinach leaves in the fridge for a salad and gave him a few. He has turned his nose up at spinach leaves that have fallen to the floor while I'm cooking in the past, but this time, HE LOVED THE SPINACH! He ate it like it was his greatest meal of all time. When I walked away from the kitchen, he started barking for it and doing tricks for me to go get him some more. Is there something I'm missing here? what does it mean when they want greens? Was it bad for me to give him spinach? Right now, he is in the kitchen barking for it again! Let me know!!! =) |
For grass eaters, we recommend romaine lettuce. Toss a few leaves in the blender with some water and put a teaspoon on the dry food. You can pour the rest into ice cube trays and freeze. |
I'd just give him some plain lettuce. Maybe he likes the taste and texture of the greens. I was going to say to just give him a little but since he's used to grazing in the yard it probably doesn't matter too much. |
I have never heard of feeding your dogs spinach but I have heard of lettuce! |
It is natural for a dog to want to eat grass. I would not go with the cheap iceburg though. Romane is just fine  |
Let them eat grass - it's good for them and they love it!!! If they throw up or cough after eating it, it's just because some of it gets lodged in their throat - causing them to cough, etc. In this case, give them food or water to help the grass go down. My dogs and cats have eaten and loved grass all their lives. Carol Jean |

When Good Dogs Eat Bad Things This is a link that TXShopper/Kimberley recently shared, and I've added it to my favorites. After what Gucci went through the other week, I thought it was some good information to have at hand. Anywho.... At the end of the PLANTS paragragh, it mentions that spinach might be harmful. You might want to check into that further... |
I thought that they eat grass only if they feel that their diet is not enough for them or they try to eat grass to get heartburn or something... but then I agree with stacy... Not the best to just eat grass.. I feel that it is important to really look into their diet to see how you can find better solutions for them. |
