How to introduce puppy to Senior dog 2 Attachment(s) I live in an apartment with my baby Oliver (5months) and at my mom's house is my brother's bichon Spencer (8 years). On some weekends and during the summer I stay at my MOm's house. Oliver and Spencer have "met".... Met meaning I put Oliver on a leash and make him sit and let SPencer sniff him, then I make spencer sit and let Oliver sniff HIM. Problem is- Oliver wants to play and Spencer wants NONE of it. Spencer will growl at Oliver if Oliver starts to come near him. It's weird because as long as Oliver sits still Spencer doesn't care, but as soon as Oliver shows interest in Spencer he starts growling. I'm almost positive it is because he (spencer) is scared. (He's a HUGE baby!!!!) ANy suggestions since they will be living together this summer? I have watched Dog Whisper and figured I should use "the power of the walk" and try to walk them... but with these two I don't see if as either wanting to fight. With Oliver it is playfullness and with SPencer it is because he is scared and old. Any suggestions would be sooo helpful! Thank you!!! |
I don't know if this will help or not but I have a housefull of all ages of dogs and when I bring in a new rescue (who is certainly frightened) I set up the Xpen in the backyard and let the gang out. They all immediately run to the new dog and everyone is sniffing each other but with the Xpen no one can hurt anyone. This goes on for about 5 - 10 minutes and then the dogs start moving away to water the bushes and explore. I then let the new dog out to wander with them. After about 20 minutes then we all come inside. I have to tell you I have never had a fight until the honeymoon period was over with and it was always over a toy - which are now kept outside. |
When I got Cali I was worried about my 8 1/2 year old pom who is crabby and snappy. They seem to work it out. Cali will jump at Maya and she will growl and snap but has never hurt her and that's usually over a cookie. They will lay next to each other a lot during the day. Just never leave them alone together unless supervised. |
