Am I a Bad Mommy? As some of you may know, my Lola had orthopedic surgery last Tuesday. Her leg has 5 screws and a plate in it now. Here's my problem... The doctor wants her movements restricted. While I am at work, I have her in a pen large enough for her bed, food, and her pee pad. While I am home, I let her be free with limitations. There are gates up so that she can not run in her favorite places. The problem is that when I get home I can here her outside barking and whining. She has never been couped up like this and by the time I get home, she is wild. The doctor said we can give her a mild sedative if need be. Do you guys think that I am wrong if I sedate her? My boyfriend thinks we should not give her any drugs. What do you guys think? :confused: |
You are certainly not a bad mom. A girl on another board had to use some kind of sedative when her dog was recovering from surgery due to her broken leg. You are not encouraging drug addiction and if it helps keep your dog quiet so she will heal faster things will be better in the long run. I'd go with the mild sedative. |
Totally Agree Yes, your poor baby. I wish her a quick recovery. I believe as well that a seditive is okay, you are actually being a good mother, not a bad one. Quote:

You certainly not a bad mom. Sometimes decisions for the benefit of the animal must be made. You are sedating her for selfish reasons; you are doing so for her health. That is being a good Mommy, and you are also doing so on the advice of your vet -- this makes a huge difference. |
You are definitely NOT being a bad mom - we sedate people when they need to be quiet, for example, with a head injury, we sedate people so that they do not become agitated and raise the pressure in their brains and do more damage. So, you are only protecting your baby, like we protect humans when they are in need of healing. I hope your baby does well and I think you are a GOOD mom! |
Update! I spoke with my regular vet(not the surgeon who recommended the sedation.) He is hesitant to give her anything. He is convinced that she only heard me and thats what riles her. He asked if I could video tape her to check out how she behaves when I am gone. I am going to try this on Friday. He says that if she is truly upset the whole time, then we can sedate her. I am hoping he is right. Thank you all for your support! :) |

You are not being a bad momma if you are acting on the advice of your vet and doing sedation in an effort to calm her so she can heal quicker and more completely. Keep us posted on her progress! |
When your dog has free run of the house (you can still keep her somewhat restricted). Have her on a leash and keep her relatively close to where you are. I don't mean a leash that you have to hold on to....I just mean a rope (or something) that is about about 8 feet long that you can tie somewhere and keep her in whatever area you or the rest of the family is in. This will keep her from running all over the house - and she'll be happy to be with the rest of you. And - if she's especially peppy and wants to run around alot - I think you would be smart to sedate her (as the vet mentioned) for a while. He'll give you something that will probably only calm her down --- and isn't that the way you want her to be.....just a little calmer!!!! Good luck. Carol Jean |
