micro chip how do they work i have heard that if they are stolen or lost they have to brought to a vet for them to be able to tell if it is urs. Or do u have a scanner and u can scan and see where they are at? I don't really understand them if someone could give me some info i would appreciate it. thanks alot :dog: |
I would also like to know this! We never were even asked if we wanted to buy a micro chip for Sully. Do they work? I know that Yorkies are often stolen out of yards and re-sold (that's why they're INdoor dogs and we protect Sully big time!) We are still considering getting one for Sully, if he is not too old, but only if it is worth the money we will pay to do it! |
I believe that all US Vets and shelters have scanners, and even some breeders may have put out the money for one. And yes, the dog does have to be scanned to find out who owns it. A lot of vets automaticly scan new pets that are brought into the office the first time just to see. That is how one person got her dog back after it was taken from her yard. It was about a month later that she received a call, the dog was taken to a vet and the vet scanned and found the chip and contacted the chip company and the dog was returned. I don't know what happened to the people that had the dog, but the owner was very happy to see her little one again. She thought he was gone for good. Everyone has to make up their own mind about whether or not to chip their dogs. A collar with an ID tag can be removed, but the chip is inserted under the skin and half the time people don't even know it is there until it is scanned. |
All my 3 girls have microchips . These are easy to implant and never move from a place to another . I was really happy when one of mine have been recovered after a little escape . I received a phone call from a vet clinic telling me they have found a little one with the number ......who might be mine and it really was her, I was really full of joy . |
I have a chip in my charlie it is just find they can scan his back if he gets lost and they can find me and return him to me. I think it is great. It is just the size of a grain of rice and they put in between his sholder blade. :animal-sm |
Can i go anywhere to get my babies chipped? because i don't have a regular vet, i'm still on the search for one, and i usually go to Petco's Vetco for oreo's shots. and how much is it and how does this whole process work? a lot of paper work? |
I had my other bigger dogs chipped and my cat, but they said for a tiny yorkie it can be painful and it's best to do it when they are neutered or spayed or under anesthesia for some other reason. Another option is to have the dog tattooed. I don't know how that works and whether it is painful or not. Has anyone ever had their dog tattooed? |
I have 2 Yorkies girls who are 3 pounders . The have had their microchips at 8 weeks old , when the vet implanted the chips , the girls didn't even make a sound . I have had to fill a form and sign it for the Avid company . The form is to know the name of the dog , and your name , address and phone number , also an emergency phone number just in case . |
In my opinion tattooing is worst than a microchip . Microchipping a puppy is just like when he or she have vaccinations . |
It cost me $30.00, I dont know if it is the same price everywhere, Im sure you can go to a vet and have it done even if you are not a customer, my vet suggested to have it done while he was being neutered. The dog wears a tag stating he is marked and has a # and phone # in case he is found,, then you can take them to a vet or a dog pound they all have the scanners to scan them, then scanned it will bring up my info and he will be returned,, there was a case locally that a dog was stolen from someones yard,,, and later someone reported it, the police went with a scanner scanned the dog and it was returned! :D I believe even if he is found and you call the phone # on the tag , they will locate the owner,, no scanner involved. |
I surely prefer this method of identification . After seeing the way my breeder was doing the tattoo , I asked her to not tatoo mine , she ask me which method I'll use since the pups have to be registered , I told her about the microchip. She have been kind enough to let me go to my vet for having them microchipped before living her home . When I purchased the pups , she erased $100.00 on the price of them . Since then , she also used the microchip for her pups . |
