puppy or adopted? Hi, Im new to YT, and I really love the beauty of yorkshire terriers. I have been reading posts and you all have such beautiful babies! I have been wanting to find the perfect little boy to call my own for a while. I have 5 amazing cats. Three are seniors, and the other two are 6 months. I really like the idea of adopting an older yorkie, but I am not sure with my cats if it would be better to have a puppy grow up with them so he could get used to them. I know 5 cats seems like alot, but our oldest is 20 and next is 14, so they are all older and arent crazy little kitties. We take care of all our animals, and they are all spayed/neutered except our youngest kitten he goes friday to get his neutering! I also have a choc. lab. She is great with our neighbors little dog. I am in no hurry what so ever to find my new yorkie. I just want to hear what others think. |
I have a cat and two yorkies and I would say definitely get a puppy. It would be better if he grew up with the cats. Both of mine were puppies and they dont bother my cat. |
Thanks for the input! |
I think that giving a homeless animal a new lease at life is a heart warming thing. Many times you can find one that are good with cats. Check out petfinder.com. Most animals on there were tested with cats to see how they do. Best of luck with whatever you choose  |
Hi and welcome to YT :D We have a boxer, guinea pig and a 10 month old Yorkie named Georgie. I absolutely adore him and they all 3 get along great especially the our boxer Coco and Georgie :D I would recommend a puppy they can adjust older dogs are more set in their ways IMO. Best of luck in your search I just love Yorkies :D |

I agree with StewiesMom! Simon is 2 and I rescued him and a few months ago I fell in love with a cat that needed a home and gave the cat a place to stay for the weekend with us here! Simon LOVED LOVED LOVED Wyatt (the cat) and he loved him back. It was so cute how well they got along. On the other hand is Hallie (who I also rescued) who wanted to eat the cat for a snack so I've seen both sides. Petfinder has little icons that tell you what the dogs are good with. Check there and see what you can find :) Good Luck with your search! |
I just wanted to say that it is wonderful that you are considering opening your home to an animal that really needs it. I believe most humane societies and rescue agencies assess their dogs for personality and behavioral traits. They can recommend a dog for you that is good with cats. I wish you the best in whatever you decide and welcome to YT!! :) |
Welcome to yorkietalk! I think that adopting one is a great idea! There are lots of pets in shelters in need of a loving home! |
Thanks guys i hate reading all the information about the homless animals in shelters when they look at you through their pictures its so sad and it hurts me to think people treat animals the way they do. I will be searching PetFinder for a while til i find the perfect one for me thanks again |
Hi, welcome!! I'm glad you are thinking of adoption. In my own experience we adopted a Yorkie, not as a baby, and he perfectly fine with our cat. I really think it depends on the individual dog, and if you work with a rescue society they will work with you on testing the dog with your cats for compatibility before adoption. Giving a dog a home is an awesome thing, but good luck in whatever you choose! |
