Won't Let Us Sleep!!! We got our Luka about a month and a half ago, and have not had a full night's sleep ever since! He is about six and a half months old and as cute as can be, but I would love to figure out how to get him to sleep through the night. We have tried everything that we can think of. He goes to sleep fine right when we do, but he is up at around 4 or 5 every morning and won't go back to sleep after that. We have tried leaving him in his crate and ignoring him, letting him sleep with us, and trying to get him to just play without us, but he really really wants us to play everyday all night long. We both work, and I am afraid that he is sleeping all day and then wanting to play with us all night. We have tried taking him on long walks in the evening to tucker him out, but that hasnt worked. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks. |
Welcom Lackadaisi!! Your sleepless little guy Luka sounds adoarable. I am afraid your problem is one I can't think of a solution for. I think you have guessed it. He sleeps all day. Oh...I know, a playmate...second dog, a friend to play with during the day!! Maybe if you threw a ball and he ran after it 50 times he would be more tired at bedtime than a walk. You are going to hate me but I have a yorkie that loves to sleep late in the morning. It's wonderful because so do I. I cannot always do that, but when I can, it's heaven because he just stays right there in bed with me! If a second dog insn't in the cards, you might hire a pet sitter to come in once or twice a day to play with him and used up some of that excess energy. |
Thank you for your response. Do you know what the advantages/disadvantages to having two puppies as opposed to one are? |
they get into more trouble....my husband bought me my first yorkie and rodney was so miserable, he would chew everything, so the vet said he was bored and to get another one, then we got dusty...they chewed twice as much, thank goodness it didnt last long. you could not seperate them...if one had to go to the groomers without the other one, they would whine and cry the whole time, i finally starting taking both of them even if one didnt need grooming, same with the vet...two years ago, dusty went to rainbow heaven and rodney became very depressed. the vet even talked to us about putting him on an antidepressant...(we didnt do that). 2 weeks ago, we bought another yorkie (Diesel) :animal-sm and it took Rodney about 3-4 days to get used to the new puppy, and now they sleep together and play together. A short answer to your question is, I think two yorkies are good comapny for one another especially if they are home alone for more than a few hours at a time. |
These brats know exactly how to jerk our chains!! Is there a place where you can put your baby so that he will not cause your neighbors to have you arrested? If so, I would suggest you put Mr. Early Morning Riser in that place in his crate and go to bed as usual. However, instead of allowing him to get y'all up, put in ear plugs and let him whine away.. He has you trained and it is time you TRAIN him!! I suspect you will see pee and poop in the crate cause his elimination systems are accustomed to going at the earlier hour. Sometimes, you just have to decide which behavior is more annoying and go from there. Good Luck with getting that youngun trained.. |
Wow...sounds familar. My little guy was doing the SAME thing...he has recently gotten a little better because of the time change!!! No matter what time he would go to bed, he would get up every morning between 5:00 AM - 5:30 AM. I too, was going crazy. It is hard when both people in the house hold work full time and you NEED the sleep! He now sleeps until 6:00 - 6:30 AM, which is better. This is what I have done differently... I put a big thick fluffy blanket inside his crate. I had a small one in there - now he can get real comfortable and has less space to move (so he has to lay down!). I also put a toy in there for him every night. In addition, I cover the crate with a blanket so that he can't see how light it is in the morning. Lastly, I started setting my alarm to go off at a certain time (6:30 AM) and will NOT get up for him until that alarm goes off. My thought is that he will start to notice that I don't get him up until that alarm goes off. In the next few weeks, I'll make it a little later to hopefully achieve more sleep! Try that. At least I get one additional hour of sleep which is better than nothing!!! I don't let Stomper eat/drink after 7 PM and make him go potty before we go to sleep. That is antoher helpful tip to make sure he doesn't need to go potty. I also tried to ignore him, tell him NO, tap the crate, move him to another room, etc...didn't help even a little! Good luck. |
Diesel slept until 7:30 this morning. I think my husband found a trick. Besides putting a little blanket over the crate, my husband puts one of his t-shirts or my t-shirts in his crate with him...He really seems to like it....It also kinda explains why every morning, my husband said Diesel waits until he hears me shut the shower door and come in running and get my sweat pants and t-shirt and take off running down the hall and pull them into his crate....i could very easily stop this by putting my clothes up higher, but he seems to enjoy it when i come running down the hall with a towel wrapped around me looking for my clothes...the crazy thing we do for our pets... |
