Weight question... Gracie's mom weighed 6 pounds and her dad was 5 pounds, at almost 2 years old Gracie weighs exactly 3 pounds... She is a VERY picky eater and maybe eats 1/4 of a cup of kibble (or less) and 3 small treats daily... should I be worried about her weight and force her to eat more???? Should I bring her to the vet to see if there is a problem? She has a normal activity level but does sleep a lot during the day, she always has... After reading posts about sizes an all and how much they eat in a day it got me wondering if I should be concerned... |
do you give her any soft food? I have Kloey on a schedule, she eats 2 times a day, morning and late afternoon, I give her 1 large TBS of dry RC for yorkies and a TBS of soft Eukanuba, she seems happy and knows when it's time to eat, she also chews on a bully stix when she wants. |
She's just small - there's no way to make her bigger. She's eating about what she should be eating. If you can't see her ribs, then she's not thin - fattening her up would be just as unhealthy on her small frame. I would make sure the treats you are giving her are good for her. With the small amount tiny dogs consume you need to make sure everything they eat is nutritious. How much did she weigh as a baby? Was she one of those that quit growing at an early age? |
From our exprience 1 Attachment(s) We have 2 YTs one is 11lbs. and a bit overweight. and Daisy is 5+mos. and she is barely 2 lbs. She eats 12-15 kibble pieces at a meal and 1-2 treats daily. My wife also gives her meat sticks from Gerber baby to add more vitamins and calories to her diet. We're not sure how much she will weigh but you can definitely feel her ribs and spine. She is highly active too. We both feel this is how she will always be. |
She does not eat soft food that often (she is very fickle when it comes to food!), just Eukanuba kibble, she turns her nose up at everything else. The treats I give her vary, they are NOT nutritious treats, just treats. I have tried dog biscuits as treats and she refuses to eat them... I don't remember her weight when we got her but she has been 3 pounds since she was 7 months old, actually she was 3.3 pounds when she was 7 months old and then lost those 3 ounces right after she got spayd at 11 months old and never gained them back! |
I give mine Baby Food weinnies in a jar for treats. A little over $1.00 for 8 weinnies, but they are high in protein. Never had a dog that didn't love them. I use the meat sticks and the chicken sticks. |
She sounds healthy, just little! My puppy is similar and also picky. She eats small amounts of kibble, but will eat cooked liver, mince, chicken and raw chicken necks. I used the Kiwi version of Nutrical and it did increase her appitite after about a week. I still give it occasionally. I can feel my pup's ribs easily, but they don't stand out.She has lots of energy, but sleeps quite a lot too.I try not to worry about her size, although Mum is a Silky who is a lot bigger than Holly will ever be. Dad was a small Yorkie-she seems more like him.If her eyes are bright, she has energy and is ready to play, she will be healthy. |

Is she skinny or just small? My Beanie is the "runt" of the litter and weighs 3.2lbs and just turned one. Her mother was 7 lbs and her father was 5lbs. They sold her as a pet because she was too small to breed. It's okay, and even cuter, if she's small - if she's skinny...you might want to talk to you vet. |
