Wanted to Share Cough Experience I have posted on this board a few times about my puppy's cough. For the first 3 days that I got him he didnt' cough. After the third day he had a horrible cough mostly when he first woke up and if he ran around a lot. When he'd wake up in the mornings it was the worst. He would literally walk and cough and it sounded like he was dying. Of course I thought the worse...trachea collapse! But I thought about it and realized it started 3 days after I got him. I had taken him to the vet for his first set of shots 4 days after the cough started and she gave him some Amoxil. She said she thought it was post nasal drip due to allergies because it wasn't in his chest, but she still prescribed Amoxi. The Amoxil didn't work. I figured he has some sort of allergy and this was causing the drip. I even changed his food. I also read that post nasal drip could be due to an infection related to sinusitis. So, I went back to the vet a few weeks later and asked her to prescribe something else because I thought he may have sinusitis. She prescribed Cepha drops. That still didn't work. This went on for about 6 weeks. 10 days ago I decided to try some homeopath drops for allergies, inflamation and sinusitis. I figured it couldn't hurt. Well, needless to say, his cough is gone. I'm not sure if he just "outgrew" his problem or it's a mere coincidence or if the drops REALLY worked. I put 5 drops of the medicine on his food 3 times a day. I'm so happy. I wanted to share this with those that are have the non-congestion type morning cough. If you've tried anitbiotics and they haven't worked you may want to try the homeopath drops. Like I said, it could all just be coincidence......but it's worth giving a try. This is what I used: http://www.1800petmeds.com/pdetail.a...P=&WT=&MG=&PT= |
i've got a sad experience the k9 unit here at our sheriff's office had being coughing alot and i told him to go to the vet that it was probably just kennel cough. he took him to the vet yesterday and he has cancer, the masses are pressing on his throat and that's what causing him to cough. they only gave him 2mths. he's going to get a second opinion just incase but the outcome doesnt look good. |
Caillou was a little puppy of 6 months old . One day , he had a cough , I took him to a vet , the vet never took time to look at him , he said to give him baby sirop and in a day or two it will be over . I was very mad at the vet so I bring Caillou to the Animal Hospital of Montreal. They kept him for 1 day . The vet called me and told me to go to the hospital right away , he wouldn't tell me by the phone . I finally learned that Caillou had a heart too big for the valves . Unfortunately, he died during surgery . Since that day , I always go the Hospital with my little ones . I learned , it is better to have them exam if I am not sure . |
I wish i could help you:( Like Diego said, take him to another vet to get another opinion.. Hope he feels better soon.. |
I hope everyone realizes that my vet is very competent and I saw her NUMEROUS times. My puppy had 2 rounds of antibiotics, also. I was just sharing my experience. Amoxil and Cepha drops are used for kennel cough and sinusitis. I was also given Temaril but I chose not to use it. I think steroids can cause more harm than good. I also, suggest puppies been seen by their vets, but I just wanted the people that have posted with the same experience as me regarding the non-congestive cough a more natural alternative. It can't hurt. |
I don't need help. My puppy is doing GREAT since I started the nose relief drops. It's a happy ending that I wanted to share with others. I love my vet...she's the best. OH, maybe you are talking about K9. Sorry to hear about the cancer. :( How sad. |
i hope i didnt offend you i was only sharing an experience as well. i didn't mean anything by the comment i made about getting a second opinion i only told him that since it's such a terrible diagnosis |
Ringo , I am sure your vet is competent . Hope your little one feels better . They are so precious to us . |
Thanks for sharing Ringo. I really hate it when my dog get a cough. It takes forever for it to go away. I will have to try it. Thanks!! |
Ringo- Thanks for the homeopath remedy. My daughter's little yorkie has a cough that they can't get to go away. I am going to recommend this to her!! Great advice! |
All too often, what we call a cough is in fact tracheal collapse in Yorkies with "reverse sneeze". That always worries me cause the result can be congestive heart failure, pulmonary congestion(fluid in the lungs)..If you feel 100% confident in your vet, then take their advice and give the meds they prescribe. But, unless the holistic meds are from certain groups that are harmful, they can sometimes give relief.. Please continue to keep us up-dated. I am really interested in alternative meds and this sounds like a winner..Hope that baby of yours continues to stay well... |
Ringo- I am going to try that stuff. I can relate to the morning coughing and the meds slowed the cough down, but its still around. Thanks for the post! |
My little guy has bronchitis. The vet says he had congesting around his lungs. He had for about 2 weeks. He put him on some different meds like a cough suppresant and some Cemaphox. I was wondering Ringo if I can still try your remedy also? Does anyone share this similiar experience? |
Cough We got Bella Friday and she didn't start coughing until Sunday night. I called the Animal Hospital (which is where our vet is) and they told me to bring her right in. They said she had kennel cough They did a complete exam and gave her Bordetella vacinnation and then gave me Clavamox tablets 62.5 mg. I am to give her 1 tablet orally twice a day. She said other then the kennel cough she as very very healthy!! |
atcapers...like I said...my pup just had postnasal drip and that's what made him cough. He didn't have any congestion at all. I'd try the antibiotics first....but you may want to try this if they don't work: http://www.1800petmeds.com/pdetail.a...P=&WT=&MG=&PT= I'm all for trying conventional methods first...but I've had a lot of luck with doing things the "natural" way. I'm so glad he's finally stopped coughing. I still add 2 drops to his food and I'm going to stop them completely next week. |
