Puppy Mill?? How do you know if a facility is a puppy mill? I was driving home last night and there was a sign on a mailbox that listed numerous breeds of pups for sale. I went home and got my husband so we could investigate it. The couple had 8 cages in their living room with 4 Boston Bulls, 4 Bichons, 4 dacshunds, one shih tzu, 4 poms and 2 schnauzer/poodle mix pups. I asked where the parents were and she said they all came from breeders in Pennsylvania. She said they had all been to the vet, none of them are papered and they seemed well cared for. I did think that some of them were way to small to have been taken away from their mama's. Supposedly all the pups of the same breed were sibblings. The place was clean but the babies were all caged. They were ALL playful and not shy at all. Is this a puppy farm? I have no idea if she is licensed to sell pups out of her home like this or if she even needs a license. Who could I ask that question of? Is this a puppy farm or just a broker? What do you think. |

sounds fishy to me, but then i don't believe in keeping dogs caged or tied up. i know you have to place them in crates from time to time but that is different. they could have been brokers. |

Sounds like they are buying from a mill and they are the sellers, ( Broker) like a petstore, They want the $$, they buy them and sell them for more $, Were they expensive? Were they ready to go to homes, how old were they? |

They ranged in price from $400 to $600 depending on sex and breed. Some of them look ready to go but some look pretty young although she called them the runts and maybe they were. She seemed to genuinely care for them - she was playing with them and her husband was cleaning the cages when we went by. |

She sounds like a broker to me. :thumbdown |

I just remembered the broker told me that she got all the pups from breeders in Lancaster, PA. We visit there sometimes and every time we have gone we see people on the street corners with signs saying to stop puppy mills. I asked about it once and was told that there are Amish puppy mills up there and that is what the people were protesting. Some coincidence huh?? |

 just be careful :Hugs: |

This sounds like a broker who bought puppies from a mill to me. What are you intending to do about it? I really don't think you can do anything about it. I'm just happy to hear that the puppies seem like they are being well taken care of and hope they end up in good homes. |

I can see red flags!!! :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown |

She could be a broker or she could by lying to you. Lots of people that run puppy mills will have their adults way away from your view and they WILL say they are selling other peoples pups. Were there any big buildings on the property? Any sheds? Any buildings that looked like chicken coops? Is there anyway you could see the whole place? You could think you are talking to a nice farm couple and the whole time behind their barn they could be hiding the parents.. I would call your humaine society and alert them to this. They could start and investigation. |
