Ahhhhhh I took my 6 mth old yorkie to the groomers for the first time, see we have her and a great dane they LOVE to play together outside we have a huge yard and it has a 6 foot wood privacy fence. She had really long hair and it gotto the point where I had to bath her twice a week, and she still looked icky. So I gave in and took her to the groomers, and what I got back was SCARY, she has almost no hair it almost looks like they buzz cut her, I said puppy cut not butcher cut...... Shes still my sweet girl but she looks terrible I was so upset she has no face hair either.... Not even a pony tail on top of her head they cut her hair almost flat on top. Oh raised serious H*LL and did'nt have to pay for the cut, but goodness I hope it grows back fast! Anybody else have a bad experience! |
Awww..at least you wont have to bathe her as often! Im sure she still looks PRECIOUS :D |
Im sure your baby is still cute I know you may have been shocked but on the bright side they are really soft when you hug and kiss them. |
I'm Sorry I am a groomer and I am sorry you had a bad experience. There are sooo many cute clips Yorkies can have. Maybe next time you go to a groomer try taking a picture along of what you would like. Her hair will grow back before you know it. |
Yes, I think we have all had bad experiences- If I go to a groomer- I make a 3X5 card with a drawn picture of a Yorkie- I mark in red what they are allowed to touch!! If they touch anything else- of course I never go back- and I always ask to see her before I pay. I also take a picture of exactly what I want her to look like- and ask if they can do it- I have been burned so many times. The experience has actually taught me to do the same when I go to the hair dressers- it makes sense. If they cannot do what you ask- you can just walk away! One nice thing- they are still so cute either way and their hair does grow pretty fast-- I understand- the experience is tramatizing:0 |
I think all groomers have a different perspective on a puppy cut. You have to be very specific about what you want done. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. I hope it grows back quickly. :) |
I am takng my 5 month pup to the groomers for the first time tomorrow so this thread makes me very nervous.I will follow the advice to the letter! |

You should have made them put in extentions LOL Poor baby! Good thing it does grow back! Now I'm really scared cuz Kloey goes to the groomers for the first time in April! Yikes!!!!!! |
Believe me - with three dogs - I have had some bad cuts. I always pay. And - I don't jump on my groomer, but point out what I don't like about the cut...too short here, too short there, etc. And, she listens. Usually, after a couple visits, we get things worked out, and we start getting the cut that I want. Nevertheless, at times a cut is still a little shorter than I want, but what the heck, it lasts longer and grows back quickly. My new pup hasn't been to a groomer yet. I am able to keep him in a "good enough" puppy cut and he's looking good. I can say that I certainly feel sorry for my groomer the first time she gets this pup. He is definitely not very cooperative and is a total wiggleworm. Grooming him the first few times is going to be very difficult at best. I plan to be quite forgiving the first few times we go there. But, we'll get it worked out just fine --eventually!!!! Carol Jean |
3 Attachment(s) UGH! I know what you are talking about ... the same thing happened to me. I was so upset when I brought him home that day. Here are the before and after pics.. horrible... And also here is one from more recentley |
Oh I'm sure she's super cute! You might want to put a sweater on her. They get cold with the puppy cut. I was in shock when Princess had her first puppy cut. The good news is, it grows back. |

LOVE the new do!!!! |
And I thought it was bad when they cut Jolene's ear. Like everyone has said, at least it grows back pretty fast. Definitely consider a sweater. |
I agree with snow wa I still would of payed. I doubt she meant to give a hair cut you didn't like. That's pretty much the standard for a puppy cut on a yorkie. If you want longer tell them you want a short skirt..sorry you didn't like it..i think she looks adorable... |

Thank you... I think I was more in shock then anything... I stared at him for a while wondering where my puppy was. But thank god his hair is growing like weeds. Now if only it would lay nice and flat.. heheh |
So how DO you get the rounded face effect? Do you cut in a circle all the way up to the ears or curve out or up at some point. I'm "going in" with the scissors today. Have never seen the puppy cut done. So sorry a bout your experience. Giz's hair grows faster than mine! :) |
Just a few ideas when you take your yorkie to a groomer for a "puppy cut". Be aware that technically there really is no such thing as a puppy cut. That term can mean lots of things and can be interpreted a lot of ways. I would think that if someone says they want a puppy cut they want the dog to look like a fuzzy little puppy, maybe 3/4 to 1 inch long body like a 3-4 month old puppy. Someone else might think really short like a 6 week old puppy. You need to be specific. Before you go, get out a ruler and think about how long you want the hair so when you go you can really tell the groomer what you want. If you want a round fluffy face, say so. If you plan on keeping a ponytail make sure you tell them that also. Chances are after your puppy's hair elastic is removed and she is bathed and dried (often by someone other than the groomer) all the groomer is seeing is a dog with bangs that are too long and that groomer is probably going to fix that problem. Especially if the ponytail hair is not very long to start with and not obviously being saved for a ponytail. No groomer will send a dog home with hair hanging in it's eyes unless they realize you are trying to grow out a ponytail. Often the person you hand your dog over to is just a receptionist and not the groomer so make sure they write down your instructions and maybe have them read them back to you. Pictures are great. Bring pictures of what you want if you have them. When you get your dog back find out what size blades were used and take a picture when you get home and write the blade sizes on it. If you like the cut you can take the picture with you next time and tell the groomer to do the same thing. If you don't like the cut you can show them the picture and point out what you don't like and have them do it differently. |
