Waiting as long as possible before spaying Just wondering at what age did you have your dogs spayed? Lydia just turned 7 months old, and I'm trying to hold out as long as safely possible. My reasoning is because of Chelsie's collapsed Trachea. I had her spayed right at 6 months old, and she started with the coughing episodes right after. I believe Collapsed Trachea is genetic, weak cartilige. My concern is the trac tube that is used...seems like if they are still growing it's not good to irritate the trachea tissue/cartilige. I was thinking maybe 8 months, I know little dogs go into heat later than bigger dogs. What do you think? Kara |
I was waiting to have Cali done because she was small and had beeen sick a lot. I waited too long, she came into heat a few weeks ago at 8 1/2 months. I ended up having her spayed a week into her heat cycle because they thought she had a intestinal blockage. She did fine. I am so glad to have it over. Good luck she will be fine. |

I have a little yorkie. Debbie was just about 7 months old and weighed 2.7 pounds when I had her spayed. Since then she's been put under two more times for baby teeth removal and then teeth cleaning last year. Knock wood but she's always been fine so far. Try to find a vet who is knowledgeable about tiny dogs. We lost a big yorkie to pyometra many years ago because we didn't know any better. She required a hysterectomy and I never wanted to go through something like that again. I was going to hold off on getting my Cindy spayed as well, because she is so tiny at 4 and a half months now she is still not quite 2 lbs. I thought if she gets fully grown it would be safer. Im still deciding.... I just dont want to take any chances on losing her. :confused: |

Mine were spayed at 4 months and although they were fine, it could have been a problem, so now I would have waited a little longer. |
Zoe is 7 months old and has not been spayed and has not gone into heat yet. Her breeder suggests waiting a while. I don't know her exact weight, but last vet appointment she weighed 2.2 lbs. Her breeder says that the tiny ones sometimes don't go into heat until they are over a year, sometimes more, so I'm waiting a while longer. We all have to do what we think is best, but I figure I'll wait until she can be spayed and get her remaining baby teeth pulled at the same time and not have to go under twice. |
Yorkie3 -- you should be going over your concerns with your vet and following their advise on this one. I appreciate your concerns - and am sure with your vet's advise, you can do whatever is best for your little pup. Carol Jean |
I have been holding off getting Twinkie spayed because I am so scared something will happen to her. I know that these types of procedures are done every day, but I can't help but worry. She is only 2 3/4 lbs at over a year old now & she has not gone into heat yet.... oh wouldn't it be nice if she never went into heat :D |
i'm glad to read this thread as I have been wondering the same thing. My puppy is 5 months and just over 3 lbs.I would like to wait til she is 6 or 7 months if possible,but it may be too late and she has gone into heat.Surely one heat isn't the end of the world? |
Both my Boxer and my Yorkie came in heat at 6 months. |
