Honking!!!!!!!???????? Last night Bella kept waking up making this awful "honking" noise. Has anyone ever heard of this or if so do you know what is wrong???? Thanks all. |
lexi does that too, quite often..its like a snorting sound right?... it used to scare the heck out of me, i think they all do that.. why? i wish i knew.. lexi does it when she gets excited, sometimes she will just wake up and do it. anybody know why they do that? |
It could be kennel cough. I would take her to the vet if it continues |
i have read something on a backward sneeze or cough that sounds like that also. |

do we have to do anything with that? or is it normal? |
Jewles does it and the vet says it is reverse sneezing and she is fine. |
From what I understand, they're born with it (don't quote me on this, though). All the little rings in their esophagus sort of stick together sometimes, and they do this reverse sneezing to suck air in really fast and make their throat go back to normal. Pivo does this several times a day and it doesn't seem to affect him at all, he'll be running and playing or sleeping, all while honking the entire time. When he has a bad attack, though, the best thing to help him is holding his nose so he has to breathe through his mouth and gently rubbing/massaging his throat. It clears up quickly. I don't think we noticed that he had it until he was about a year old.. it's never bothered him or affected his energy level or health, really. |
thank you, now i feel better.... |
IF she suddenly started doing it, IF she's doing it often, and IFat the end of a spell, she sounds like she is hacking up mucous: most likely it is kennel cough. If those three are there and she doesn't improve really soon, I'd take her to the vet. |
My Haley does the same thing, had her to the vets twice..... and they changed her diet and she was ruled out for kennel cough, i was scared to, and she'll do it once in awhile, it does sound like a honking noise, i wish i read this about $300.00 ago in vet bills :( |
My Chelsie has collapsed Trachea, and has a had the trachea stent surgery. Our first sign was a honking or snorting... With four Yorkies, all doing a little coughing or gagging~ I knew her honking was different than a typical reverse cough, etc... It sounded like a goose honk. It was hard to get the accurate diagnosis, as many vets and other dog owners automatically assume the other conditions. If your dogs trachea is collapsing, she will begin to honk more frequently and struggle more and more to catch her breath again. Summer heat will be hard on her as well, making the condition more obvious. I'll pray for you that she does not have a collapsing trachea~ It is such a heartbreaking condition. If you need any more information on the condition, e-mail me anytime. Kara |
do a search on the web regarding "reversed sneezing" and "collapsed trachea" so you can compare the symptoms. both are common for our small dogs. |
