Who Does thier Own Grooming? Who does thier own gromming and how did you learn? |
I do but don't do much other than: brush his hair, clip his nails once every 2 weeks, give him a bath once a week and brush his teeth nightly . . . Tiger hasn't gotten much hair at almost 6 months old so I am still letting it grow. :( |
I do !!....I learned having a stiff drink closeby helps :p :p just kidding.... I only do the basics....ears...feet..booty.....faces....and have never done a total cut. For that I think I'd leave it to the professionals.... This is a site that you can look at for some ideas...http://www.ytca.org/grooming_clips1.html |
I have groomed my own Shihtzu for 4 years now. I am looking forward to doing my Yorkie. I took a basic grooming class. The woman was fantastic. She allowed us to take our own dog and only had 4 dogs to a class. I bought an expensive set of clippers and practiced lots. I use a blade that gives my shihtzu a puppy look cut. My Yorkie is almost 5 months so I will probably give him a haircut in a month. |
i groom my boys i did pretty much trial and error sometimes it came out bad and i learn what not to do |
I've always groomed my own yorkies, and I learned from looking at pictures and knowing how I like them to look. I use a good pair of clippers and scissors. It really isn't that difficult once you get the hang of it - the first few cuts will probably look a little choppy, but with practice will improve. I give them a modified schnauzer cut - hair longer on the legs and shorter on the body. However, I always make sure the face is all 'yorkie'. :) |
all i do with lexi is her butt and the hair between her eyes .. |

I do Pippa's hair cutting/brushing etc. I am a human hairdresser so just adapt from my daily job :p |
I do Coco's full grooming, I pluck her ear hairs, her nails and trim her coat. I just learned through trial and error. My poor baby has had a few bald spots and bloody nails in the past but mommy learned eventually. I just feel more comfortable grooming her myself, so I don't have to drop her off anywhere and make her nervous. Plus if I screw up I can only get mad at me. |
Oh, I wish I had your patience and strength! I have the most wonderful groomer that I sent my other dog to, and now Topher goes to her. He had his first 'session' with her a couple of weeks ago. His hair wasn't very long, but she cleaned it up nicely and he looked beautiful...for about a day...lol...he's a typical little boy for sure! I bath him every week or so and blow dry him and brush him, but as far as I'm concerned anyone who can do this well deserves such praise because it certainly is a talent. When I do it he comes out looking nothing like when the groomer does it!!lol I'd love to be able to do it but I think I'll leave it to the groomer for now! |
I can't groom my babies except for the basics. I just given them baths, blow dry (I just ordered a hands-free dryer that I'm really excited about but haven't used yet :D ) and brush. Abbie lets me brush her teeth and trim her nails but Max is too squirmy. I was fortunate to find a groomer that I really like. Max and Abbie seem to like her too. They seem to really enjoy themselves when they go to the spa but a massage is included in the full service groom so who wouldn't enjoy that :D |
I just do the in between stuff like eyes and hiney...but I would love to learn to do it all...I just don't want him to hate me for it! |
I do Wosie! And I used to groom Angel and Jasper. I gave them puppy cuts and they were a little choppy, true, but they didn't get out much so I wasn't worried about being embarrassed. :p Wosie hasn't needed a haircut yet, but I have shaved her bottom and I trim her nails and do her teeth. I am considering trimming her ears for the second time. I kind of like fuzzy ears, but with the MeetUp coming, I want her to look her best! :p I totally learned by making mistakes! Dreama goes to the groomer. She's a little snippy when she is being groomed, so I let the professionals handle her. :animal36 |
I tried this for the first time this weekend since I am going on vacation next week and have no time to take him I didnt want to leave him with hair in his eyes. I may have gone a little to close between his eyes (good thing he cant see it..lol) But the bangs came out just fine. I gave up after that. I do hair for a living but I think I will leave this to his groomer. He actually gets excited when he goes there. She is excellent with him. She will even give him kisses in between doing another dog  |
I do my own grooming. I took basic dog grooming and advanced dog grooming courses at the local vo-tech school. :) |
I do my own, its my favorite part and I have lots of fun. I learn by reading books getting tips and secrest from other and by doing everything myself on a trial and error basis. :animal36 |
So far I am doing it all on my own.... And I am really enjoying it! Most of it that is.... Hubby is helping a bit when pixie decided that she wants to test me... She has figured out that I mean business and that when she fights me, I always win! :D Its awesome... Its really deepened our relationship I think... Is that silly? I really do think so. She has alot of respect for me, and knows that I mean no harm, she even looks forward to our grooming time now. She is not yet excited about nail clipping time, but brushing and using the clippers on her ears, she loves! She even lets me shave inbetween the pads of her paws. I hope that as her coat grows I will learn how to care for it. I know that each stage of growth will present a new set of challenges... I will be PM'ing "you know who" :aimeeyork The Amazing Spy Girls :aimeeyork Groomer for tips and tricks when that time comes! |
I do mine myself as well. I groomed dogs for a while. I alway felt that the first bath is the most important so you don't scare them for life. I can't get near them with the clippers. I tried to do his ears but he snaps up his head. I think I cut his tongne. There was blood but I could see any other than in his mouth. He wants to lick the clippers. I tried just putting it near his head and he kinda closes his eyes but as soon as I get near his ears, he snaps up and I can't do it. I gave up. I love bath time though. |
My daughter does my two, But now that she has a new job, I have been doing them. |
I do Alfie and Lottie and my mums dog pebbles, I got some tips from my hairdresser! It has been a trial and error but I suppose we have done alright. |
Did you know we now have a board about Grooming? http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=45 Check it out!! There's some great stuff there! :p |

Well I don't know anything about dog grooming. Any suggestions on where to start. Any suggestions for a good book or video- Iam a visual person and need pictures :D . what kind of clipper to use and how to get your dog to stay still :p . I looked on line to see if I could find a class and could not but I would be willing to invest in a good video or book. Help please. Chris |
Ok I have a question about self grooming... I know how to buzz his backside but what about his private area.. do I trim that as well or do I need to leave it for protection... :animal36 |
I Taught Myself I do my own. I've never taken one to the groomer. I do the light trimming regularly as needed, and in the past on my other yorkies, I did my own version of the puppy cut a couple of times a year. I just use a scissors and trim it at finger depth all over. The first couple of times it looked pretty choppy, but I got better at it. I pick a nice day and do it outside on the picnic table. |
Ummm... I just did a post in My Yorkie on who does the grooming of little Matthias.... check under "Secret Identity Revealed".... |
