New yorkie owner ok I have lots of questions I need answers too. I have a 13 wk old named Rosie. I am trying to train her on potty pads and it seems to be going pretty well except the pads seem to be a little messy and she is starting to tear them up is there a better product you would suggest for indoor training?? Also when I take her outside should I use a harness and leash? I see some people use a collar and leash? I was told that yorkies are too small for the collar is this true?? I am just trying to make sure I do everything right with her I have another dog but she is about 16 lbs so I don't have to worry as much.. |
They sell puppy pad holders that fit around the edges of the pad - this helps keep the pup from getting hold of the edges -- Because yorkies are prone to collasped tracheas - people prefer harnesses. However, for now, I am using both. For quick trips outside to pee, I put on the color and a short leash. We just go out and come back in. But, for longer trips and walks, I use a harness. I am going to buy one of the vests that hook with velcro. I think they'd be easy to put on and off and look very comfortable....plus they would also help keep the little pups warm. Carol Jean |
Congrats on your new puppy! I never used pee pads, so I'm unable to offer any opinion there, but I do swear by harnesses. I usually have a collar on my girl as well (her id and license plus some necessary bling attached!), but don't use that with her leash. There are a lot of great harnesses out there, I've always used lupine, but JUST got my first harness vest. I LOVE the harness vest, it works really well, and looks adorable all day long! Welcome to YT. I tried the pads, but Parker only shreads them. I got the holder, now he wont have anything to do with them. He seem to like this one certain little rug that I have down. Its driving me crazy. As soon as I wash it and put it back down, he does it again. I'm thinking about taking it up for good. I wanted to tell you about the harness vest. I purchased some from Connie http://www.geocities.com/maddieakama...ose/index.html and they are great. They are soooo cute. One is a vest with footballs on it and the other one is red with black paw prints. Its hard to find things for boys. I'll have her make me many more when he gets a little bigger. He is 12 weeks right now. I'll post pic of him in his vest on Monday when my husband gets back from the nascar race with my camera. She did a wonderful job on them and got them to me really really fast. Check out her site. She doesnt have the football and paw material on there but if you email her with request, She'll get them. Cali is wee wwe pad trained and has been since I got her at 9 weeks. Sometimes she would drag the pad from her playpen around but I would tell her no and put it back, eventually they catch on. I do use a holder for the pad in the front of the house and she leaves that alone. I always use harnesses because of the collapsed trachea problems in little dogs. |

My first purchase for Miss Abbie was a pink girlie step-in harness vest (cloth and velcro by DOGO) from our shop in town. I love it, and Abbie seems comfy in it, too. |
