A Yorkie's Coat Color I was just wondering if anyone new of a way to be able to tell what the puppies coloring will be when they are full grown? Thanks Chiara |
I'm not quite sure but my lil' rascal's roots are starting to turn platinum at the roots.. a real whitish-silverish color.. he's only 13 weeks. So I'm assuming he's going to be platinum when he grows older. His head is all platinum! Too bad they can't stay their little cute puppy colors their whole life! |
I have noticed on some puppies you can see them start to "break" as they say as early as 6 weeks. Some will be lighter than others. Of course seeing parents' coloring is a good clue but not a for sure thing because there are probably other colors in the genes. I have a parti-colored gold and white puppy that cam from two platinum and silver parents! You never know for sure, but a puppy who is going to be lighter will usually look lighter than it's siblings and vice versa, the darker puppy will be darker. |
Ok, that makes sense. I am not sure if you can tell from the picture (avatar) but Reese is 11 weeks old today and she is getting very platinum roots on her head. She is relatively light tan through her chest and paws and her back is more of a charcoal gray than a jet black like the standard pup. I guess I was just trying to guess what she will look like when she is older, lol. Probable a foolish thing to do I realize, but I just can't seem to get enough of thinking about her! :) |
Liz and Molly still dark 1 Attachment(s) My Liz is almost 4 years old and her daughter Molly is 2, they are both still very dark, as when they were little. Liz is on the left and Molly on the right. Molly is due to have puppies at the end of April. www.simplyyorkies.com |
Reese will probably be light in color it sounds like. It is very normal to want to know what color your baby will be and what he will look like when he gets older. I had to search the internet when I first bought mine because I didn't really know what an adult yorkie looked like. Most of what I saw were show dogs, but I pretty much can tell now, although I took Hefner to a yorkie playgroup this weekend and there were about 15 dgos there and not a one looked like the other!! It is really amazing how different the same breed can look! I never saw Hefner's parents so I am still guessing about what he will look like, but I love him no matter what color he is! Did you get to see Reese's parents? |
Tia has major silver/platinum coming in, it looks like she's going bald every where. It's so exciting to watch them change colors as they grow. Although, I'm anxious for this stage to pass as I really don't like her looking half bald ;) |
Buying a puppy is so like buying the proverbial pig in a poke. If I ever got the hang of posting pics I would post 2 pics-one of Jesse with his beautiful blue and tan coat. The other is his full sister, not litter mate but same sire and dam, and they hardly look like the same breed. I have found in my years of breeding there are very few things you can tell about a Yorkie adult by looking at it as a puppy. Only thing I am sure of is, the sex! |

I know Reese is really soft too, I love that! Her body color is not changing at all it was just her head. It is funny b/c I thought that since it was so whitish that it was not normal or something but it sounds very normal from all the responses. To be honest I did see her mother but the breeder had three litters so I am having a hard time remembering what she looked like. Oh well, I suppose I could call her and ask? I guess I will just have to wait and see. I will love her no matter what color she is though. :) I wish I didn't have to work and was home with her right now. |
