How accurate is the puppy growth chart? I was curious as to how accurate most people find the puppy growth chart to be? http://yorkiepassion.com/growthchart.htm (by the way, I don't think any of us should let deviations from this chart's predictions take away from the person who provides us with this great rule of thumb! Obviously it can't be 100% correct...I was just curious how close most found it to be.) How much did your pup weigh at birth? How big is it now? What do you think the average yorkie pup weighs at birth? (I want to at least TRY to aquire a pup within the breed standard! Not much bigger or smaller!) |
:aimeeyork I don't know for sure how accurate it is. I had a yorkie that accoring to the chart should be between 3 1/2 and 4 lbs. She tragically died at 5 mos. so I do not know how accurate the chart is. She was following the chart pretty close though. I do have a pup that I am keeping out of my litter and I have been following her weight on the chart so I will see if it holds true.. |
I think Kimberly's chart is a great estimate/average. According to it (and every other method of trying to figure out how much he would weigh as as adult) he should be about 5.75 pounds. He's 9lbs. I think this just goes to show that it's hard to estimate weights/averages for living things. According to some test my parents heard about and did when I was a baby - measuring me at 2 and a half years old and then doubling it, I was supposed to be 6 ft tall full grown. I'm 5'4 :D |

Jig my chart is a simple estimate, as in life nothing is a sure thing...genetics plays a large roll...other ways to guess the weight is triple at 8 weeks or double at 12 weeks. most of my kids stop growing at about 6-7 months so the chart works most of the time for me...but sometimes no relation Its always best to know mom and dad size and grand parents if possible... yet that can be totally wrong, as well things creep up from the past and blow it all to hell. |
It wasnt accurate for my two. According to it both of mine would have been alot smaller than they are. |
According to the weight chart Cali was on track to be 3lbs which is what the breeder said but she was the runt and now at 9 months weighs 4lbs 2ounces. Which I am glad hopefully she will put on a little more weight and top out at 4 1/2 to 5lbs. Both her parents were 5lbs. She has very fine bone structure and the tiniest head. |
Lacy (female) was 9 ounces at 8 weeks and matured at 4lbs 6 oz. according to the chart she should have been under 3 pounds. Parents 5 pounds, 4 pounds. K.C. (male) was also 9 ounces at 8 weeks and matured just under 4 pounds. Parents 4 pounds, 3 1/2 pounds. Kelsey (female) is 1 pound 6 ounces at 9 weeks so I think the chart predicts about 4 1/2 pounds - only time will tell - parents 4 1/2 pounds, 5 pounds. My experience has been that they weigh more than the chart predicts and more closely match the average of the parents' weights. Also, mine matured at more than double their 3 month weight and continued to grow for about 11 months. |
Oscar was 12 oz. and 8 weeks when I got him and he is 7 pounds now at 18 months. He is not fat either...solid muscle! But he is a good size...very sturdy little dog. His mom was 5 pounds and his dad was 3 pounds. |

At birth Gus was 4.3 oz. At 12 weeks he was 1.3 lb. He's going to be 2 on April 2 and is 3lbs even. |
It was exactly right every step of the way though I think you always have to consider bone structure. I have always had small boned which tend to be smaller. |
NOTHING is written in stone! That is a chart to go by but since the chart doesn't know what's in your pup's bloodlines, it isn't exact. Gracie weighed 2.3 lbs at 8 weeks. At one year, she weighed 4 1/2 lbs and today at 2 years, she is 5 3/4 lbs. Chester weighed 1.8 lbs at 8 weeks and topped out at 5 1/2 lbs. Rebel was 2.3 lbs at 6 weeks. At 10 1/2 months, he weighs 4 1/2 lbs. London at 8 weeks weighed 3 1/2 lbs and at 16 weeks weighs 4 3/4 lbs. That chart you posted is like a chart the doctor's office uses. It's just something to judge by but not concrete. |
