Yorkie/Shi-tzu mix??
 
Does anyone have one? A friend of mine keeps seeing them in her paper and wants to know what they look like as an adult so I told her I'd ask on YT. I just can't picture that kind of cross. If you have one please post a picture that I can show her. Thanks.

I myself do not have one, but do have a Japanese Chin / Poodle mix. It is hard to tell what purebred puppies are going to look like. Sure there are pictures representing the breed, but within every breed there are pups who mature into dogs that are quite different than the "norm". You have to remember, every dog is different. That being said, if it is this difficult to figure out what a purebred pup is going to look like, it is next to impossible to figure out what a mixed pup is going to look like when grown. You should have your friend google some of the dog mixes and look at just how different they can turn out even though they are from the same mix of breeds. Not sure that this is going to help, but would like your friend to know that it isn't as cut and dry as seeing a picture or two. Also remind your friend that they will want to research the temperaments and health problems associated with the two breeds.

Go to www.topknotchpups.com and click on the mixed breed page. They have "Shorkies" there.

Thank you. I did tell her there are no guarantees what a puppy will look like in a mixed litter or that any of them will turn out to be what she expected. She had a Shi-tzu for 17 years and a Yorkie for 5 years...we've been friends for 26 years and for 16 of that I've had Yorkies so she's familiar with both breeds. I just can't picture the facial structure of a mix with 2 breeds that are so different in the face.

I believe that there is a yorkie s**tzu mix that was for sale under the wanted and for sale section, but then I think she changed her mind. There is pics though and what a gorgeous puppy it is! check it out!

My Tiger has 1/16th s**tzu in him but don't see any trace of that breed in him . . .

Try to picture this. Yorkie coloring, with tan head and black body, floppy ears, yorkie snout. shi-tzu tail, round body, yorkie disposition, short legs, weighing 12 pounds full grown.
This was my "Buddy" who I had for 11 years, and lost him last year. That is when I bought Jack.
Buddy was so gentle, loving and protective.
It worked out to be a good mix.

Our neighbour has a Yorkie/Shihtzu and he is a very nice dog. He has a beautiful coat. His coat is way nicer than my Yorkie and my Shihtzu. I was amazed at the coat on this dog and she doesn't spend a lot of time maintaining him.

i myself have a yorkie/shi tzu mix!
 
and her name is zowee. Her birthday is January 4th 2007 and she's an awesome dog! Her coat is a brindle(ish) color and she's got white patches on her feet. I love her and can't wait for the puppies to come!

In a few months, we will be breeding her with my full bred yorkie boy. :animal36

I saw a couple with 2 "shorkies" and they were cute, but they had underbites like many shih tzus I've seen. My grand parents have a shih tzu and the underbite is the only thing that kind of weirds me out. I'm not familiar enough with the breed to know if an underbite is characteristic of it or not???

Look up the mix on www.dogbreedinfo.com it shows pics of some possible combinations.

Yep, it is a characteristic of the breed, my sister has one with a major underbite, and my first dog a was a shih-tzu/pomeranian mix, he was gorgeous!! He had pom hair, a pom tail, and a small underbite, not major, so it was cute, he didn't have the wandering eye that some shih-tzu's get, and his nose was longer, he had big eyes but he really did look more like a shih-tzu than anything!

Thanks everyone. I started this thread in March of '06 and last summer my daughter-in-law told me about a wonderful little 8 month old 'Shorkie' named Tater that was being turned in to the shelter. I told my friend and she rescued him from the Humane Society in her area and he's living a pretty good life now!

Oh they can definately be cute! I don't want anyone to think I meant they weren't when I commented on the underbite. My baby is a mix himself-half maltese/half yorkie. It's just you can't ever be sure what they will look like as an adult and I have seen some that favor one parent over the other some are cuter than others :rolleyes:

Hi, my2boyz - We have a one-year old shee tzu yorkie mix boy. He is
just great; friendly, alert, curious, lively, companionable, smart, loving.
He weighs about 14 lbs, is 15 inches from neck to base of tail and silky,
with silvery hair on face and legs. His mother is 50/50 yorkie/ sheetzu and his father is 100 yorkie. He was well socialized (from a reputable breeder) when young and so is unafraid of new things; he might bark and run in circles when he meets a new experience but then he comes close and takes a look. I found a breeder locally who had the cutest Yorkie s**t zu mixes and Maltese Yorkie mixes! Anyone have either mix they are $475 for either and I don't know which mix would be better.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi!

If you read through the thread you posted in, you may have noticed it was from 2007, and that since mixed breed dogs can pick up any characteristics from either parent, there is no 'prediction' what to expect from a Shih Tzu (pronounced "Sheed Zoo"...see the breed club at Home | American Shih Tzu Club) and Yorkshire Terrier mixed breed dog (see the breed club at http://www.theyorkshireterrierclubofamerica.org/ ) referred to as a "Shorkie". Same thing with Maltese / Yorkshire Terrier mixed breed dogs. However, all of the "Shorkies" and "Malties" I have seen have been very cute, even if very different from each other.

Since the Shih Tzu has many different color options, while the Yorkshire Terrier has only ONE color option, and a different, if also long, type of hair, and is double coated where the Yorkshire Terrier is single coated, the "Shorkie" has a good chance of having long hair, but you'd have to keep in mind that not all dogs with long hair grow the exceptional show coats, either.

Bottom line...I would have no problem taking a "Shorkie" into my home. :D I wish you good luck finding the dog of your dreams.
