Help ! ! Puppy chewing on woodwork
 

Does anyone have a suggestion for a "durable" chew toy ? ? ? We have purchased so many so far & he just chews them up. We even got him one of those really hard rubber type bones & he started chewing pieces off of it & now he is chewing the wood trim around the door :eek:

We homeschool & while we are doing school we leave our three yorkies in the laundry room which is almost the size of a bedroom, so they have plenty of room to run & play etc. I just hate to keep him in his crate while we are doing school, but I can't let him destroy things either :confused: I thought about a spray but there is so much woodwork in there I'm afraid it might make them sick. I might add that he is 13 weeks old, my other two (8mo) never did this so I was shocked to find that he would (no pun intended)

I also thought about purchasing one of those exercise pens & putting it in our breezeway during the day, but that seems kinda cruel. I am at a loss, any suggestions ? If we did do that, how would it affect him even if we are with him the rest of the day? It usually takes us about 5-6 hrs to complete a school day.

My puppies are just like my kids & would not want to hurt them in anyway & I'm just afraid putting him up for that long would not be a good thing. When we got him I just thought I could put him behind the gate with the others & everything would be fine like before :(

If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do when hubby sees what he's done :eek: :eek:

Bully sticks are good for chewing. You could put deodorant on your woodwork to keep him from chewing on it.

I bought a 'teething kong' for my little guy. I fill it with cheese and he chews on it for the longest time....he loves it. I had a regular kong for him, but he doesn't seem to like it as much as the teething one, which is a bit smaller and softer.

Topher has been caught on occasion chewing on the baseboards, but I've just had to distract him with something else.

I don't personally think that an exercise pen would be traumatic if there's plenty of rooom for the three of them to run and play. I'm sure they'd entertain each other and perhaps the kids could take a break every now and again to go and spend some time with them?

Is there anything in the deodorant that would hurt him?

You might have already tried this but if not then check out the Durable Nylabones. Gracie is a huge chewer and we go through toys FAST but Nylabones really hold up and she loves them.

When we were in puppy school the trainer told us a funny story. One of her previous students was starting to chew the baseboards in the bathroom. Her owner sprayed them down with Bitter Apple. Unfortunately it turned out the dog LOVED the taste of bitter apple. When she came home from work, well- you can imagine the state her baseboards (and cabinet bases) were in. Having said that- you could always try bitter apple since really, most dogs do hate the taste.

The deodorant works wonders. It won't hurt him because one taste and he'll leave whatever you've put it on alone....it doesn't taste too good ;)

Btw, make sure you get the gel type...won't harm what you apply it to and you won't see any white.

I was going to suggest gel type deoderant as well. My woodwork is proof that it does work!!

Bully Sticks are the best chew toy for my little Emma, she's been chewing on them since she was atleast 3 months old. Emma aslo likes to chew on the wood base, and as long as I keep her occupied with something else she doesn't do it as much. I have thought about getting some of that chew stop stuff, but she seams to be a lot better now that she's out of her teathing stage. Good Luck!

This is going to sound strange but I've heard that rubbing a dryer sheet on your woodwork works also. Must be something in the scent they don't like??

Try the kong, they take hours to finish what is inside, and by that time, they are exhausted.... ;)

Thanks for posting this! I am going through the same thing. It's not just my puppy that's chewing on all my wood, it's also 3 of the adults. They have also attacked my baseboards and corners where the walls meet. I bought a new wooden rocking chair and woke the next morning with the rockers chewed up! I was SICK!!! I also have alot of wood in my home and they're like termites!! I think I'm going to try the deodorant. Too bad I can't just spray the whole inside of the house with gel deodorant! Good Luck!

Deodorant!! Wow you learn something new everyday!! Wish I knew this 3 years ago when Bell ate her way through my house and then I went through the same thing with Lilly. :(
