What age did you start teaching commands? I was at my friends house yesterday and her dog is a maltese. She knows the commands "sit" "come" "lay down" but the ones that got me the most was that she taught her "high five" (when she says HIGH FIVE, her maltese would jump and put one hand up and touch hers), "BANG!" (and she'll play dead) and the command and importance of "NO!" because my friend will put several treats on the ground and her maltese would go and is real close to putting it in her mouth and she'll say NO! and her maltese will back away and sit down. Then she'll say "good girl!" and then "get your treat!" and she'll go eat one.. then she'll go to the second one and my friend will say "NO!" again, so on so forth. She forgot at what age she started teaching her all of this, but I want to start teaching Fred commands as well and he's 13 weeks. Should I start now before it's too late?? :p |
Oh YES! You can start now! We started Sully at 10 weeks (the day we got him, actually) and two days later he could do "sit" and "down" and then a couple days after that, he would "shake" and "dead dog" - now he can roll over and dance and we're working on "fetch" but it's taking a while, plus, I've slacked off too, lol. You can definitely start now! Make sure to reinforce his good behaviour with a small treat, like a tiny piece of a treat (nature's choice training treats from petsmart is what we used) or cheerios work too, actually!!! Good luck! |
We started teaching Chachi commands at 10 weeks. He was really receptive to it. He now sits, shakes, plays dead, rolls over, comes, and lies down. He just really seemed to take to it at that age. We can't wait to do puppy classes. Good luck with teaching tricks. It is alot of fun!! |

training How can all of these yorkies be so easy to train to do tricks, yet I always hear how hard they are to potty train? I get my yorkie in 6 days! |

I started training at eight weeks. Sit, stay, settle (lie down) and come. He learned them all very quickly. |
I'm sure you do not realize this but you have been teaching your dog commands already. I'm sure you use the word "Come" or "here", "No", "good girl" etc... They are all commands. So it isn't too early or late to teach. Just have short fun sessions with you puppy and have lots and lots of treats available. Have fun! Hope to hear about all the trick she learned. |
You can start at 8 weeks old . |
Thank you guys so much! My little guy is so freakin' hyper I can't make him stay still to teach him a thing! I will say "Sit" and he'll just run around me chasing my hand! But I will try and try until this little goober gets it! :p |
I am having a hard time teaching Reese anything other than sit. Does anyone have any suggestions or any books on training they especially like? |
Natalie- My husband would sit on a stool. (close to the ground) Anyway when he first started if the command was sit he would push his butt untill he sat then give him the trat. Same thing with rolling over etc. They catch on quick. He always gave him tons of praise so Chachi was eager to do tricks. |
I would check into puppy classes in the area. I have been through them twice and even though I won't get my baby till the end of the month, I think I can do it myself. :p |
WOW!!! reading what you guys posted about your dogs doing tricks at around 10-13 weeks is AMAZING and EXCITING ME! my yorkie is going to be 12 weeks old this 10th of april! and i would really love to teach her tricks as well! especially playing DEAD with the "Bang" command! i think that is amazing!!!!! other tricks as well. but question is. how do you do teach them? is there any information online that teaches you step by step on how to teach them tricks and commands? i would love to teach my yorkie some tricks! please let me know! i am getting soooo excited! i can't wait to get home from work and play with him the whole niiiiiight!! :D :Puppy: |
I don't know if theres any info online but this has been a topic of many threads on here so you could go back and read those. I love the playing dead the best too. My husband will use the gun signal and ask would you rather be (someones name) or dead and he will turn on his back. So cute!!! |
