snakes we have a bird sanctuary behind our street and it has water sources. after we moved here the lady next door came over and said she noticed that i had a small dog and wanted to warn me. apparently she had two small dogs killed by snakes coming out of there. so all last year we only took her out on the leash (we only ever found 4 snakes in the yard and they were small). now that the fence is fixed we give her (and the newbie) more freedom to wonder around in the back yard. well it is getting warm so they will be coming out again. i have found something at lowes called snake away. you put it around the area you do not want them to come into. has anyone ever used this stuff to know if it works or even safe to use with small dogs in the yard. i would only put it on the outside of the fence so no chance to eat it, but kinda wondering if that is close enough for them to inhale it, being so close to the ground. |
Well for the snake guard I am not familiar with, but I would not take chances if you think they might come across a snake. Remember these little oneare terriers and they will investigate and attack any moving creature. This is just their nature and next thing you know you're little one is pawing and barking trying to attack the snake, it ends up bitten and dead. Use you're best judgement and do what you feel is best and in the best interest of you're babies. I am sure you love them alot. :animal36 |
we never take chances with them and do all we can to not have places that snakes would like to curl up, keep the grass low, all those kinds of things. just wondering about the snake away and if it really does work. we have children also and i hate snakes so if something would keep them at bay (don't care how small they are)i am all for it. but i don't want to risk the health of my animals. they mostly come in the front yard were the tree frogs seem to stay, but i take no chances that they will not wonder to the back. |

If she had 2 dogs killed (how AWFUL) then I would def check into anything you can do to snakeproof your yard....wow - that would make me NUTS with worry...GOOD LUCK !! |
Oh my! Snakes, how awful! I just hate those creatures! I would definitely be checking into whatever kept them at bay! Your Yorkie won't stand for a snake in their yard...they will do whatever it takes to get rid of it and the outcome might not be so well for your baby! We live out in the country but with two outside cats, we don't hardly ever see any snakes...thank goodness! Good luck and be careful! |
My 15 year old daughter LOVES snakes..so i'll send her to your house for snake duty lol.. I live in the country and there were snakes galore when we moved here but I have to say shortly after we moved here we haven't seen any around the house..but I have a big dog outside. I wonder if all the activity keeps them away.. |

Ewww...we saw a snake in our pond this week. It's the first one we've seen since we've lived here. It was kind of cool to watch it swim, but it made me a little nervous about the pups. Tank has been getting more and more adventurous about the water and whiel I want him to learn how to swim I don't want him to do it in snake infested water! |

Were the dogs that were killed kept outside? I may be wrong but I wouldn't think the snakes would bother them during the day with all the activity. I defenitely wouldn't let them out at night. I also don't think snakes are a problem with the grass being low. I will see what else I can find out for you... |
