My yorkie is being so bed. Advice please.... Hi im not sure where to post this but im at my wits end. When i got my dog he was well trained and no trouble at all. Now he growls at my boyfriend constantly even if my bf just walk past him. Also he now goes to the toilet in the house whereever and whenever he feels like it. I have just come home and stood in another puddle of wee. When he does this i take him right up to it, tap his nose then put hin in another room but this does not appear to be working. Could I get some advice please? Its really making me sad. Thanks |
Is your little baby roaming the house freely while you're away? It helped to confine my baby Oliver until he knew to use his litter box. When I WAS home he would still be limited to the room I was in and have access to the bathroom. Every 15 or so minutes I would have him follow me into the bathroom (that way he learned where it was in the house) and I said "go potty" and waited. If he didn't go I kept an eye on him and kept running him back and forth. When I wasn't home he was confined to the bathroom and learned to use the litterbox. As far as growling goes- it's a rule in the house that whenever someone new enters the room Oliver must be introduced. The person (even if it's my boyfriend who LIVES with us) must pick Oliver up and let him smell him (or even if it's just a hand) until Oliver calms down. Also you could try letting your boyfriend reward your baby for tricks or taking him for a walk or feeding him. Those are bonding experiences that will help the two get along. I hope that helped! Best of luck!!! |
thanks for that. The thing is he is 5 years old and he was trained when we got him. My bf does live with us. Thanks again hun. I really want to get him back to his gorgeous self, i hate being angry with him. |
Your bf needs to let your puppy know who is boss. I would have him gently lay the puppy on his back when he growls and hold him there until he is calm. You might also let him feed him and give him treats. As for the house training...my 11 month old still goes wherever so I'm no expert. But, it sounds like you are giving him the run of the house when you are not home. He should be confined to a small area with a wee wee pad or newspaper to go on if he has to. He should never be out of your sight so that you can "catch him in the act". Then just pick him up and take him outside. Tapping his nose or showing him the puddle won't help at all. He has no idea what is wrong or that he is responsible for it. A puppy might look guilty but they don't associate what they did with you being mad. To them it's the pee that is making you mad. Then when they see you go to the puddle they think you are mad at the pee again and they look upset. Does that make any sense? It takes patience, patience, patience! Good luck. |

One thought- maybe since he has stopped going where he is supposed to you need to go back to treating him like a puppy until he learns who's boss. (maybe have your boyfriend help in confining him and retraining him) Another thought- my other dog, Spencer the bichon, when he was about 5 years old started peeing everywhere!! And he was a VERY well trained dog so we didn't understand why he was misbehaving so much. After weeks of him [eeing all over the place we took him to the vet and found out he had kidney stones! He was having trouble peeing because of them and needed them removed. After the surgery he was back to peeing outside. Hopefully it's nothing like that with your baby, but it's just a thought! Have a good day |
Bizzbeth is right. When a dog starts having potty problems such as yours, he should first be checked for medical reasons. He has to learn that your boyfriend is a good guy. Maybe he should be responsible for feeding him. I hope this all works out for you and your little boy starts behaving the way he used to. |
i agree that your bf needs to show your yorkie who's boss. your yorkie sees your bf as invading the hierarchy of your pack. my yorkie did that with my husband in the beginning too. but we took care of it quickly so it's not a habit. when bunjee growled at hubby, hubby growled back. it was the funniest thing. we didn't use any physical correction methods, it was just based on tone of voice. as for the pottying. is he outdoor trained? or indoor trained in a litter box or on a potty pad. if he's having accidents in the house now, confining him to a smaller area is a must. crating him or using a belly band on him while you're out could help as well. using a belly band on him while you're home can also help to save your floors/carpet from repeat messes. remember to clean the accidents with an enzyme cleaner like nature's miracle so he wouldn't sniff and think to pee in the same spot again in the house. and if you're going to reprimand him with a light tap on the nose, you really need to catch him in the act. good luck! |
good ideas everyone. Make sure there aren't any physical problems affecting his behavior. If he has a Urinary tract infection that could make him cranky. |
Thanks guys! he is trained to go outside and his last owner said she had no problems with him going to the toilet inside. He just went to the vets not even a week ago (for a full check up and booster jabs) so i dont think there can be anything wrong. Also when bf tells him off thats mainly when he pees, he just satnds there and does it. |

How long have you had him? It sounds to me like he is jealous of your BF. The dog whisperer would tell you that the dog does not see you as the leader of the pack. Dogs need a calm asserive leader, if you haven't established yourself as the leader, then the dog will become the leader. The problem is may not with your BF it might be with you. Here is the link to his website. good information. http://www.dogchannel.com/dog/expert...aspx?WT.srch=1 |
I have had him for almost 2 months. |
it does sound like your yorkie is submissive pee'ing with your bf. it's worth doing a google search on submissive urination in dogs and see what the experts say. if all else fails, it's helpful to go to a dog behavioralist and seek recommendations based on your specific situtation. |
