Ear Problems Anyone have a yorkie with ear problems  or ear mites? Jasmine, my 7 yr old yorkie, has been scratching, whining, and rubbing her ears on the carpet for a while now. I have been using an Ear Canker Powder but her ears feel so hot now. She is not comfortable at all. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.... |
Do they have an odor? Does it sound liquidy when you rub her ears or when she shakes her head. If so she has an infection. If you suspect it is ear mites. You need to get a cleaner and mite stuff. The vet told me that powder didn't work very well. |
Thanks for responding so quickly. It has a mild odor but not intolerable and they do look a little moist. The color is fire red. I just put more powder in her ears and she is quite content for now. I have a 4 month yorkie that nags Jasmine all the time and it always seems to flare up after they play. Last month I even put an antibiotic cream in her ears because she had major scabs. It is strange but I have never had ear problems with her until Jake, our puppy, came along. |
I would take her to the vet. It could be mites or an infection OR it could be an allergic reaction to something. |
It sounds like it's an infection. It will not go away on it's own. I would take her to get some antibiotics. If they're hot and red that can't be good. |
My vet. is open on Saturdays but it is hard to get in. I might have to wait until Monday but I need to keep her comfortable for now. I will still call in the morning. I even swabbed peroxide with a cotton ball in her ears last month and it just bubbled. I really thought she was better until now. The insides of her ears are definitely inflamed and swolen. |

I'm thinking that Jake might need to be checked out also. I would rather cure them both if he is the carrier. Jasmine is sound asleep now. I guess she was ready for some rest. She is hiding from Jake so she doesn't have to play. |

Don't do this without asking the vet BUT, if you see black crud it might be mites and the ear wash that you get at the pet store might help relieve some of it. (it's a mixture with mostly alcohol I think?) and if it is allergic reaction (to bites or something in the air) which will make ears hot, red and swollen you could try a little cortizone cream just on the inside of the ears. (I had a dog with major allergies) AGAIN, talk to the vet. Also over the counter, benedryl helps with allergic reaction. good luck |
I just put the powder in about ten minutes ago so I might try and clean with peroxide for the scabs (if any) later. I have an antibiotic/anti-itch cream to use as well. I just lost an 18 year old dog last week and I guess I'm trying to be over-protective now. I do not want to see another one of my dogs suffer for any reason if I can help it...even if only minor suffering. |
I found this site, maybe something here will help http://www.vetinfo.com/dogear.html http://www.furlongspetsupply.com/how_to_clean_a_dog's_ears.htm Very sorry to hear about your recent loss. 18 years!!! you are obviously a good parent. |
Speaking of benadryl, I keep that handy because Jasmine suffers from "reversed-sneeze syndrome"...pretty much just snorting and sounds like she can't get her breath. I will try that if the vet suggest that tomorrow. |
