I have a big Hawk living in my Neighborhood!
 

I cant hardly even take Harley outside , this stupid bird is living out there. He has seen Harley, and one day swooped down at us, Harley was on the leash too. And I was standing right there, that bird did not even care about that. I want to get a kennel , but, I think I will have to put a top on it for sure. I was hoping to just be able to let him in it.He is cooped up in the house to much, I cant even tie him out or anything. And there is no way I can let him off the leash, He is faster then grease lightening. I feel like sitting in my house with a beebee gun , you know what I mean, If that bird even so much as touches my furbaby, ka bamm......

I feel for you. I have the same problem. Our house is backed up to railroad land..... forest. We have both hawks and owls. They love to just fly around in our backyard. I can never let Winston go out by himself or without a leash.

I have the same problem - this stupid hawk keeps flying over our pasture which is behind our yard. I want to shoot it but my husband says they are protected. I want him to show me how to use his shotgun anyway - no one would know and I think it's more important to protect my pets.

your baby looks alot like mine. My picture on here is a old one.I really never get a chance to post because Harley is always wanting to play or lay on my lap when I am on here.Ha But the owl and bird thing is making me crazy , I just cant believe I cant just let him out. My sheltie was 14 when she passed and lived outside never dreamed about this problem. I would just about die if it attacked.

I would love to shoot it. probably go to jail or something stupid like that. I guess It ok for a dumb bird to eat my Harley alive. but cant kill it. go figure

Winston is not afraid of anything. Even those big birds or big dogs. He thinks he is the biggest boy on the block. I not only have to watch out for Winston, in a couple of weeks when the hummingbirds come back, I'll have to watch out for them too.

I would love to see a new picture of Harley. Here is a new picture of Winston.

I can totally relate to how you feel!! We too live in the "woods" and there are hawks flying around not to mention the huge bob cat! Hubby has one of those camaras you set up in the woods to take pictures that's motion activated. When he developed the film a few months ago, there was a picture of one of the biggest bob cats we've ever seen (when I get home, I'll try to remember to scan it in and share). A couple weeks ago, I had just let Gabby and Gage back in when a neighbor's cat came into the yard. The bob cat jumped the fence, and went after that cat - we could hear the chase and the "yelling" for several minutes. My babies no longer go outside by themselves....just too dangerous, even with a fenced in back yard! So get that bb gun! I, for one, don't blame you.

I swear you have my Harley I love that picture. They look alot alike I will try to post another one. My baby kills all his toys, cant imagine this summer...... He is 8 months in a few days.

Oh my gosh. a bob cat, I know we have coyotes. I would flip out over the cat thing.

We have the hawk, coyote, and owl problems here too. I am a nervous wreck even when I am with Shelby in the yard. Nothing I could do if a hawk swooped down. I only take her out when I have someone else to watch the sky with me...or she is on a leash.

I heard of one woman who was outside with her little poodle and she watched a hawk pick up her dog and fly away. just horrible.

And I did flip!! When I saw the picture, I really didn't think it was a bob cat because it was so big! But there was no mistaking it a couple weeks ago. We had always thought he wouldn't hang around, that maybe he was just passing through and got his picture taken but we were wrong. And because Gage is so much smaller than Gabby (and doesn't listen nearly as well as she does), he definitely does not go out without being on his leash!! It's a shame our babies can't enjoy their own yards!!

We live in a rural area too, and there are tons of hawks and owls living here. I never let the girls out unless I am out there with them, and I have seen the hawks come near to scope them out. They haven't swooped down, or I would totally flip. If the girl's aren't on the deck, they are on their lawn ties. No way would I let them run loose.

I am so looking forward to the Yorkie MeetUp in April so I can see how they act running loose on the ground in the enclosure! They probably won't know what to do! Wosie got about 10 minutes of it the other night, and she wouldn't let me catch her, lol!

I got the same problem as you all, live in the country and no fenced yard, thinking about a kennel also with a top ....or a new House !!!! I take Rosi out on a retractable leash, and i take her to my daughters house with a fenced in yard !

There are coyotes, hawks, and owls where I live.

I personally - am almost as afraid with my dog on a leash.

I was in my sister's yard one afternoon when a hawk came from behind me going 100 miles an hour (and actually brushed through my hair) to get a small baby quail that was only a few feet in front of me. It had been hanging around for a while and knew I was there - and this didn't stop it at all.

Because of this, I know for a fact that my being close to my Yorkie wouldn't keep a hawk from diving for it. And, I can't see a reason in the world why my pup being on a leash would stop a hawk. It probably wouldn't even know the leash was there.

It is certainly a worry for me. This is just one more reason that I'm glad my Yorkie has a couple extra pounds on him. He weighs 8 1/2 pounds - and may be a little large for some of the smaller hawks around here - but, then again, some of the hawks around my house aren't all that small.

I wouldn't hesitate to kill a hawk if it went after my dog...and I'd be willing to pay any consequences. But since I have no gun, and wouldn't know how to shoot one if I did, the only thing I can ever do to a hawk is yell and scream and try and chase it away..... And, they are so fast, this wouldn't work anyway.

Like Carol, I don't fear a hawk getting Gabby. It's doubtful he could lift that 16-pound Miss Piggy off the ground...LOL...but I still love her:) Gage on the other hand is 6 pounds, he might could take to flight with him.

Hubby has the picture of the bob cat with him and he has taken our youngest to the deer camp to get some turkey hunting in. He'll be back tomorrow and I'll try to post it them.

we have an outdoor kennel it is 10x20 and we used white plastic lattice on the top because of the hawks we have here. they can't get in and it offers some shade and still lets in sunshine and it don't sagg and tear like a tarp-- it did get old and my husband reinforced it with some lumber, don't look to good but works

Oh my! PLEASE be careful!! We had a hawk incident recently. It flew in throught he loose door screen on my parents porch after Cody and Abby! :( The scary part is, my dad was right there...in between dogs and hawk and it didn't think twice about continuing to go after them anyway. :eek:

The hawk and owl danger is very scary. Those of you with bigger yorkies should still beware. The breeder I got Maddie from had a sheltie which was about 16 pounds. A hawk or eagle tried to get it. This dog still has the scars to prove it and thank goodness it didn't break the dogs back. Even if you have your dog on a leash, if an owl or hawk swoops down, their talons can penetrate the dog's spine and kill it..so even if you were pulling on the leash to get it away from the bird, it would probably be too late! Thing is, they attack without warning...they are so sly and so quiet! Wishing everyone's yorkie safety against these birds of prey!

Yikes, a hawk, how scarey!! I would suggest that you let a conservation agent know but that probably isn't wise incase something 'happens' to the hawk. Do you live in a rural area? Would anyone know if you took care of the hawk yourself? Whatever happens, be careful!

I had my girls out on the deck with me, and the wind was a bit colder than I liked, so I popped back inside to get my coat. I wasn't in there more than 10 seconds. Really. When I stepped back outside, a HAWK flew over the deck not 3 feet above my head!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!! Freaked me RIGHT OUT!!!

Never ever ever will I leave my girls out without me. :mad:
