Home on the Range - More Range - More Pee Pads Greetings wonderful and wise yorkie sisters and brothers, I wanted to give you an update on Annie and Susie as they are about 14 weeks old now. I haven't written in a little while because quite frankly, my husband and I have been pretty busy with the little ones. :D Both girls are 80% successful in using their pee pads in their gated area of the kitchen. We still take them outside as well about every 1-1/2 hours. We now are letting them wander around the house a little bit (after they come in from outside) and they are all excited, snooping everywhere. We have a pretty big house so there is lots to explore and get used to. We have added additional pee pads upstairs and downstairs but how do we get the girls to be more aware of them and that they are to go on them when they are outside their gated area? We only let them wander around a short while (like 10 minutes right now) as they will pee on the carpet. I show them the other pee pads but it doesn't seem to make any kind of impact. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance. |
:p Been there .... we found that the "hit or miss" period requires lots of watching, treats and celebration!! When Toto would hit the pad we would treat her and do the "happy dance"! When she missed and we knew it wasn't accidental [sometimes their little butts will hang over the side] ... we said absolutely nothing ... just silently cleaned it up and let it go. Didn't take her long to know that when she goes on the pad, there's reward. Very soon her aim was perfect! Good luck! ;) |
I am not a pee-pad user so maybe I am speaking out of turn, but I don't think you should have more than one place to have them go potty inside the house. I think using pee-pads should be viewed the same as going outside to potty. There should be a designated area for going potty. You need to pick that area whether it be in the bathroom, kitchen, garage or where ever. and you need to bring them to that area when you want them to go. If they can learn to walk to the door to go outside to potty, they can learn to go down stairs or out of other rooms to go to the designated area to potty. (same concept). I think having more than one room to potty in is when people get into trouble and their dogs never really get 100% house broken, because you are training them, that it's ok to potty anywhere in the house. They have a hard time distinguishing from a potty pad, carpet, or rugs. But they won't have a hard time distinguishing between the "one" potty room and all the other rooms in the house once they learn what you are asking of them. |
Very interesting points. I didn't think of that at all. The pee pads in the gated area work very well for them but it is a closed gated area as they are not ready yet to have full run of the house. They also know how to go to the door when they are downstairs to go outside. Thanks much. |
Can they get to the pee pad in the gated area when you let them have some freedom? It sounds like they ( and you) are doing a great job. I would agree that limiting the number of wee pads might help. Remember to give them treats when they USE the pad, even if they are gated in and you see them use it. Too many pads or moving pads around confuses them. Shelby has one pad upstairs and one downstairs. |
