Educate me on pups please? We have been wanting a yorkie pup for awhile now and have started researching the breed. My question is- as pups can you tell what color/coat kind of adult your pup will turn into? I really like the shorter length wire/wool type coat and the tan coats without the silver. I read over the coats & color section but I don't get it all. thanks in advance |
It's almost impossible to know. I wish there was a better answer for you, but there really isn't. As far as coat type, that you could possibly be able to guess from the parents. Make sure neither parent has a nice silky coat if you're not looking for the typical show dog coat. Otherwise you won't get the wooly look. As far as color, you'll just have to hope you get what you want. |
coat Please say ou are kidding, right...you really want a wooly coat..have you ever groomed a wooly Yorkie? It is liek lamb's wool and must be shaved down. A Yorkie can not be both wiry and wooly...it should not be either, but repsect your desire for a difficult coat..good luck. |
wish you luck Quote:
i agree with you here. |
I have to agree with the above posts. The only positive about the wooly or more cottony coat is they look better shaved. A yorkie with a silky coat shaved looks a bit choppy and a cottony coat looks thick. A grown out cotton coat is impossible to maintain and will mat if not brushed out every single day. Both my yorkies have silky coats and I can go a week without brushing them and still won't get a single mat. |
I'm not sure if that's exactly what I want. I know I don't like what I guess is called Silk (really long straight hair). I like short/shaggy look. I try to find names & pictures of each type of coat but I only can find details- nothing that is a picture with name. Now is the shorter hair just accomplished by keeping it short- or is it an actual type. I like this look- http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/att...chmentid=43769 picture is borrowed from another post here |
You can keep any coat type in a puppy cut, but silk is the standard and easiest to groom. Best way to get the pup you want is to see the parents, and grandparents if possible. Good luck in your search. |

Yup...looks like you like the puppy cut. That is how I am going to groom my two...because it is cute and easy! My two are 12 weeks and I can already see the color changes...but some don't change for a long time...if at all. You just never know ;) |
My Chloe has a cottony coat and its a pain to keep brushed, I brush her everyday and she still gets mattes in her hair. And you are not going to find a short haired yorkie you have to get their hair cut! they will all grow long coats! |
Thanks- got the same answer today from a breeder. It's the cut style. Back to more researching & see if a Yorkie is for me :) |

If ever a poster needs to listen to Pat, it is now. She not only bred for a hunnert years, showed for half a hunnert, but she also groomed forever. She knows coats and she is right..I have all coat textures in my pack of off-colors and I will gladly accept help bathing and grooming some of my Biewers and standard colors..Gimme the coat on my choc boy anytime.. It is more wiry but that is typical of the off-colors..in my experience.. |
My pup has a silk coat (never matts or tangles) and is very easy to comb. I like the puppy cut too and will keep him in this for now. My pup totally changed to silver and a light tan by the time he was four months old. I like his colors. Carol Jean |

Are you saying that your Biewers are more "cottoney" ? My baby seems to be in between a cotton and a silky coat. It does matt fairly easy and I need to brush her every day. Just wondering if that is what you meant? ;) |
