Sit? I'm not sure how to go about teaching "sit". I've been pushing her butt down and saying sit. Then I give her a treat if she stays sitting. She doesn't seem to be understanding this. What's the best way to teach this and other commands? |
To teach sit hold the tiny bit of treat in your hand (I cut up those Pupperoni sticks or use baby food chicken weinnies in a jar). Hold the treat low and slowly move back over your dog's head sayng "sit" - he will (or should) automatically sit to keep an eye on the treat. Then I click (with a clicker) as he sits. They usually learn this in about 2 seconds. |

Don't wait for her to stay sitting before you treat.... give it to her the instant her bum touches the ground. |
It's working. She got the hang of it with the treat in my hand. I waited about 5 min and tried it without a treat in my hand and she sat when I told her to. This is great! What should I try next, after she really understands it? How do I do other commands? |
Good job!! After she's sitting, you can bring the treat down low and "lure" her into a down position. With my girls I have had to help their legs come forward into a down, and then treat instantly. |
After a long time of practicing "sit".... when she really gets it.... you can practice a down-stay. Do what you were doing and wait for her to sit for a bit, and then treat. You can extend the time as she gets better and better at it. |

Like others have said you can go to down (lay down) and stay next. I went to up and just held the treat higher and said up, up, up in a higher pitch voice and immediately "clicked" with my clicker when he jumped up. I then went on on walking on his hind legs and turning circles while standing. Lay down (to me) seems a little harder to teach little dogs (big dogs seem to get it as quickly as sit). After come, sit, up, I taught, stay and shake left paw and other paw. The clicker makes communication easier for the dog to understand. He knows when he hears the clicker he knows he is doing what you desire of him. |
