cat and dog friends? My brother and his girlfriend's got 3 cats ranging from 2 years to 10 months old, each with their own personalities. The two older cats tend to play with each other, leaving the 10 month old to hang by himself, so we wanted Bunjee to be able to become friends with the younger cat. The problem is, Bunjee wants to sniff the cat and when the cat moves defensively away from him. Since Bunjee can't sniff the cat, he'll playfully bark and jump around the cat to test how friendly the cat is. The cat has NO CLUE what Bunjee is doing and will either ignore Bunjee or continue to act defensively, with a raised paw, ready to swat if necesssary. Bunjee wants to play, but don't know how to approach. The cat is curious, but still cautious. So my question is... for those of you with both cat(s) and dog(s), how do you get the two of them together so that they can become friends? Or are some cats and some dogs predisposed not to like the other species? |
I think that both animals will decide if they like eachother or not. I don't think there's a way for us to change that, especially with cats. I have three cats, and all but one hate any new animal that comes into the house. Last summer, I got Macey a kitten to keep her company and they were best friends. She has since passed away, and I have another Yorkie named Lilah. Delilah isn't as much of a fan of the cat, though she doesn't mind him. He would love to be her buddy though! Anyway, in my experience things vary with each animal. Good luck! |
is there anything i can do to "encourage" them to be friendly with each other? or at least get bunjee to quit barking and jumping at the cat. |
My experience with dogs and cats is that a kitten will adjust and love a dog, the dog will lovingly accept his new playmate. Cats, on the other hand, do not seem as willing. Our cats tolerate the dogs, the dogs are afraid of the cats. The cats will walk up and sit in the middle of them all and the dogs freeze in fear. The dogs will surround the cat, staying about 1 foot away and bark like crazy, if the cat runs - they give chase and stay at the safe distance. Sorry, but that has been and is my experiences with them. |
1 Attachment(s) We have three cats (Sasha-8, Whisper-5, and Peanut-2). We brought Bella home almost two weeks ago, and so far, Sasha seems to HATE her. Not afraid, just pure dislike. I don't think she's afraid because she'll just walk by her and hiss... It's kind of funny. What's even funnier (but maybe in a not-so-good way is that Bella has started growling when Sasha gets near. :D Peanut and Whisper on the other hand are still a little afraid of Bella. They'll come around and love to watch her, but when they get to close, Bella gets excited and starts hopping and bopping around, and the cats run away. I can tell they wanna play together and I hope sooooooon they will. Good luck! |
