Help weird growth....what is this?! 1 Attachment(s) I was cleaning the goop out of the corner of Tank's eyes and found this growth on his nose. He's been pawing his face lately, but it's been more like an eye rub than anything and I checked his face but didn't find this until today. At first I thought it was just something stuck in his fur but when I tried to get it off he squeeled. When I pulled his fur back farther I could tell it was attached. This is the best picture I could get. I had to hold his hair back and his head because he kept jerking away so sorry that my hand is in the way. I'm supposed to take him to the vet this week but I have a last minute business trip so I won't be able to go until Friday or next week... What do you think it is? |
Is it soft? Could be a tick that's lodged under the skin. |
It's attatched at the very edge though, like a wart or mole or something...it's possible that it's a tick with all the running around and sniffing outside that he does, but it's not a lump coming out of the skin... |
A wart or mole sounds possible too. If it's a tick you should be able to see it but he may not let you remove it. Sounds like the vet is your best bet. Let us know and don't worry. :) |
Totally looks like a tick in the picture. Look really close and you might see the tiny black legs where it's connected. We're seeing tons of ticks lately on dogs at work. Not fun! |
OH MY!! Hmmmm Yes I would take him to the Vet, It could be a mole, I hope it's not a tick, because if it is, I don't think he should wait that long for a Vet, but then I know nothing about ticks. Please keep us posted, try not to worry, I know easy said, hard to do. Hang in there. |

I just made the picture really big, Dawn125 said to look for black legs, It just might be a tick, but like I said I really no nothing about them. Can anyone else resize the picture to see if they see legs? Sending Tank hugs!!! |
Ok 2 questions, 1 how can you tell for sure that it is a tick? And 2 can you remove it from a dog the same way you do with a human? |
Don't worry - don't panic!!!! It is some sort of a (probably benign) growth that will have to be removed --because it is growing - and you know it is growing because probably a month ago or so, it wasn't there. I see no hurry getting to the vet, but when you can in a couple of weeks, take your little guy in and get it taken care of. My, much older, dog has a little growth on her lower lip that was slowly getting larger. It was easily removed, and we had no problems because of it. Carol Jean |

You won't see the legs when its that engorged. Yes, you can remove it with tweezers as close to the skin as possible. Do not twist pull straight out and follow with a dab of neosporin. I think it is a tick because you said he was scratching at it. Ticks carry a lot of diseases. I would want it removed as soon as possible. You could poke it with a sharp needle and see if it is a tick engorged with blood. A tick would be smooth and the best thing I can think of to describe it would be like a blister consistency just barely attached to the skin. |

When you "mess with it" the tick bites harder so if you're getting a reaction from the dog just barely touching it, it is probably a tick and not a growth. |
well, im not good at this stuff, but just hope for the best with your baby! once when my dog had a tick it was smooth and a grey coloer. my dad took it off with some tweezers, while me, my sister, and mom were trying to calm our beagle. |
It was a tick. I held him tight and my hubby pulled it out. I didn't like it at all but it's out and gone. We know what to keep an eye out for now. Thanks so much for the advice! I don't know what I'd do withough everyone here at YT!! Love Leah and Tank |
Glad its out - expect a little swelling because of the toxins released - it doesn't mean you left the head in, but keep an eye on it and neosporin would be a good idea. Before a tick is engorged it is tiny and dark brown or black with little legs and a tear shaped body. The quicker you find them, the easier they are to remove. Yorkies are so little you can usually do an entire body check quickly (never saw one that close to an eye, usually on the edges of their ears). |
That's a relief! Glad to hear it was a tick and you got it out. Hope the little guy is ok. My boys have gotten them mostly around the head area, and I've usually found them right away. Now I keep them confined to the deck/patio area because the ticks seem to be everywhere. |
I will definitly start doing checks when they come inside from now on. I'm glad I know what to look for now and how to remove them. Poor guy he just curled up in my lap and slept as soon as we finished...he's not a cuddle bug either so it's rare that I get that. I hate that it was a tick though. Hopefully I'll catch them early next time! Leah |
Are you using some sort of tick treatment like Frontline? One application works for 3 months against ticks (but only 1 month for fleas). It sounds like you might need it for your little one. |
Yes, we have had ticks on our Yorkies- once between the eyes, looked a lot like your picture, it kept growing and growing and duh- we finally wised up. The other one was at the base of the ear in the hair where you could hardly see it. Glad you baby is ok!!!!!!!!! |
So glad to hear you got it out!!!! Hope Tank feels better today!!! |

if you try pulling it out its head can brake off in the skin if its a tick. an old way of doing it is to light a match blow it out and then place it on the tick the tick will then come off but maybe you shouldnt try that as your not sure its a tick and you dont want to burn the dog. :( |
ha ha must check and make sure ive not missed page 2 of forum post. sorry i only read page one so im a bit late on giving the advice :) :D |

Yes, it's a tick that's been on for awhile. Reuger's had several already this year. Just get a good grip on it and pull. Sometimes you have to pull hard. Then go flush it down the toilet. No vet bill. No extra costs. End of story. You guys really get me to laughing sometimes!!! |
  Oops! I guess that I missed some of the answers. I'm glad that you got it off. |
