What to do? My little baby's growing up...! <sniff> Frodo is 4 months right now and yesterday, I witnessed him for the first time humping a favorite toy of his. He only does it to that one toy, but my question is this: It's natural for dogs to hump, but should I discourage him from doing it or just let him be? Any and all thoughts and comments would be welcome! Thanks |
I remember the first time - probably around the same 4 months mark - that I witnessed Kensington hump his stuffed turtle. I was shocked, mostly because he only weigh around 1 1/2 pounds at that point so he seemed like such an innocent little baby. When I asked my vet, she assured me that it wasn't sexual at that stage. It is an alpha dog assertion thing or something - very instinctual. In fact, you'll see the female dogs do the same thing. They are working out their role in the pack. I'm, of course, no expert - but that is what I was told. Hope that helps! :) |
I've also heard the same thing, but I have heard that your should try to discourage it, especially if they do it to you or family members so they know that you are the alpha and the dominant one. :) |
My little female does it, but only to her best friend...a female Yorkie. At first I ignored it but now I just touch her and tell her NO. It is definitely a dominance thing and it needs to stop. Plus it's freakin embarrassing when we are all in public together. |
I totally understand how you feel when Georgie was about 5 months he started humping any and everything, and I felt a little sad since he was such a little baby. Now (at 10 months) I just pick him up and start to play with him to distract him from what he is doing it works most of the time:) |
Join the club. My 4-year-old Bichon has been neutered since he was a pup and a huge stuffed dog is the love of his life. It is the only thing he has ever humped in his life. When company is coming I put Peaches (the stuffed dog) away so my Bichon won't make a fool of himself and offend people. Now, my little 7-month-old Yorkie has fallen in love with a big stuffed leopard that I have and humps it (only it and nothing else). He's due to get neutered soon, and I doubt his love for Leo the leopard will diminish after that. I could solve all our problems if I got rid of these two stuffed animals - but they love them so much - I just haven't had the heart to do it yet. Good luck!! Carol Jean |
Thank you all! That helps a ton :) Yes, it is embarrassing when it happens in public - that's why I leave his "humping toy" at home when we go out! :) |
Glad you agree -- let's move their "humping toys" when we have company. We sure don't want our little dogs embarrassing us! Right? Not like the rest of our family doesn't!!!!! --- one way or another!! Carol Jean |
OMG, I have a mondo embarrassing humping story! I had an adult male bulldog who was definitely the alpha among the dogs. My friends from England came to visit and they must have left their door ajar. Chris went to get something out of their suitcase and he said, "Uh, Julie, I have a slight problem." I went into the guest room and there was Chaucer humping the suitcase. And he would NOT stop or let anyone near the case! My son tried to pick him up and he started growling like crazy! I had to go get some mondo yummy treats to lure him away and they kept the guest room door closed from then on! I was mortified! Julie |
Gus did this alot before getting neutered. But he will still try to hump when he gets too excited. But not as much as before he was fixed. He only really does it with my son, husband, and youngest daughter. I wouldn't mind if he did it with his toys, it nature and all but we do not let him to it to us. As for humping his toys, he hasn't done that in a very long time. |
