Allergies
 
I have a question... in doing my research before getting a Yorkie, I went to several websites looking for lists of dogs good for allergy sufferers. Yorkies were on the list. But now we've got a Yorkie, and my fiance is sniffling and sneezing and taking daily doses of Claritin (which don't seem to help). What can I do?! Not only is the dog chewing up everything in sight, but she's making him feel miserable. Does anyone know of a good allergy medicine or something? And why did those sites claim that Yorkies were good dogs for allergy sufferers?

Sorry he is suffering so. Yorkies are hypoallergenic dogs but that only means less likely to cause allergic reactions. There isn't any breed of dog (even hairless) that is completely allergen free because it is the dander, saliva or urine that causes the allergy not the fur/hair.
To make it even more confusing, a person can be allergic to one breed of hypoallergenic dog but not another.

I don't know about the medications. Hopefully, someone will have some suggestions you can try.

allergic reactions result from exposure to the oils secreted by the animal's sebaceous glands. consult with your allergist to get a skin prick test and to figure out which med(s) would work best for your hubby's own condition.

I have asthma and am allergic to dogs. Fortunately, that didn't keep me from getting three :) I just increased my daily asthma medication every time we got a dog I would find a dosage that worked for me.

If your fiance doesn't have asthma he could probably try an over the counter medication such as Benadryl. Benadryl has helped me out many times. Good luck. It's not fun to be miserable.

My hubby has allergies to dogs and cats. His allergies have got better over the many years. If you give your Yorkie a bath often it will help. Also keep the dog out of the bedroom. Somehow when we would let our animals in the bedroom the allergies were bad.

I could solve all your problems and just take the puppy for you. LOL :D Then there would be no more sneezing or chewing things up. (JK)

i heard the same thing... and my bf is allergic to the puppy he is itchy and he has to keep clearing his thoat
i think it is that people are less likely to be allergic to yorkies becuz the difference in thier coat/fur but its not completely impossible
