Yorkie in rabbit cage as some must know I work in a very well known pet retail store. Well today as we were closing I helped out a customer. She was looking at a rabbit cage and was asking if we had it in a box, I said she could just take the one right off the shelf. When I asked her if she had a guinea pig or rabbit she replyed a yorkie. I then went on to explain that I too had a yorkie and asked her why she didn't get a crate instead. She replyed that she couldn't see out.(she had pointed to the kennels and not the crates) I said "oh well they make others". In an attempt to perhaps save the poor dogs feet from the grate on the bottom. She said they were all to big or something of that sort. So I let it go and took the cage to the register for her. and asked her how old her dog was she said 12. I asked did she mean 12 weeks or 12 yrs. she said 12. She only weighs two pounds and is a tea cup. OH MY GOODNESS I was so tempted to say something but I held back due to being respectful and professional. It just apalled me. I mean how would ya'll react? |
How horrible, I hope that the poor Yorkie will survive this ordeal. :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown |
I don't have words...how could someone keep a 12 year old in a wire cage...shoot...I should say...ANY Age Yorkie......that is just so so sad........... :( |
Maybe she was buying it to put the Yorkie in when she leaves the house. We still put Missy in a wire crate when we leave the house. It just isn't a rabbit cage though. I don't know the difference between them. |
WTH? Why not just get the crate? I don't know what I would have done? The difference is,, crate has flat bottom, no rungs or holes. the cage she bought has holes all around, not good to stand on at all. :thumbdown |
I was just at Pet Supplies Plus last night, I saw the bunny cages you speak of. It was mentioned on YT before about puppies being kept in a bunny cage. Looking at the cage last night, I pictured Yorkie pups in there and it made my heart sink. Too bad you couldn't refuse to sell it to her. I bet that cage was expensive too. Why don't people just buy shelving from Home Depot or Lowes and make a cozy expen for the fraction of the cost? |
I didn't even know what a rabbit pen looked like. I thought it was just like a wire crate like we keep Missy in. She sleeps in a plastic cage at night. I'm not sure if I'm even calling them by the correct names!*! |
Poor baby! I think that I would have went off, I dont think that I would have been able to hold it in! I cant imagine putting my girls in crate let alone a wire cage! |
Can someone please tell me the difference between a wire crate and a cage? I thought they made wire crates for dogs and the cage is made out of plastic. Isn't one of those what everyone puts their dog in when they leave the house? We're still using the wire crate for when we leave the house because Missy isn't housebroken yet. |

This is just so sad. I hope that poor Yorkie doesn't wind up injuried because of this woman's stupidity. |
I am not sure why you felt you needed to treat that person with respect except to keep your job-which we all understand. I have reached the age that I feel respect is earned and that person certainly would have NOT earned any from me--Imagine those little Yorkie feet-arthritic and all-walking on a wire floor. Gawd!! I hate idiots!! and she is one..Maybe someone in her family will set her straight.. |
Even my rabbit lived in a crate, not a cage. I just didn't like the idea of him walking on wire all the time. :( Sure, the poop goes to the bottom and is separated...but if you clean it out every day like a RESPONSIBLE owner, it's not a problem. Our rabbit, who stayed out most of the time, had a crate filled w/ cedar that we cleaned out EVERY day...never had problems with mess, smell, or anything of the sort. |
Poor baby!!!! :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown |
Rabbit cage 1 Attachment(s) Here's a picture of a rabbit cage I found on google... I would never imagine to put a dog inside of a rabbit cage!!!  |
Cruel people Hello oh my Goshhh.I can not understand that . Why are some people so cruel...?? I would do the same to them. What do you think ? Yes such cages are for rabbits but doggies ??? I have no words for that. About such people who put yorkies to cage I would say very bad words but I can not use them at this friendly forum.........Dana ANdy and Toby |
i have some words but i am sure that the lady wouldn't like them..... |
Oh that is so sad. Why would anyone want to keep a yorkie in a rabbit cage. Poor baby! |
wow.. what a shame. that poor doggie. |
When I think of dogs in wire cages (rabbit cages) I think Puppy Mill, that is what they do, they don't care about the dogs in general, why would they even consider their little feet. :( It is all about the $$$$ |
I was trying to be as nice as possible but man she made it so hard. at certain points I'm sure I came off a little rude. She was justifying it by saying "oh she's only two pounds, she'll only take up like this much of it(making a small square with her hands in a corner of the cage)" I do think it's only going to be for while she's gone but still....The poor dog is only 2 lbs and what about it's poor feet? Doesn't she have any brains at all? Here's a link to the exact cage she bought. http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444178 1636&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302026391&ASSORT MENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023695&bmUID=1142008736 963&itemNo=12&Nao=12&In=Small+Pet&N=2026391&Ne=2 |
Rabbit Cage !!!!! i THINK SHE SHOULD BE PUT IN THE DARN.. CAGE, SHE HOW SHE LIKES IT !!!! That is appauling, hello rabbit cage for rabbits... Not for yorkies!!! Some people just dont have the brains god gave them... :( :( :animal-pa |
Maybe if you see her again you can ask how her yorkie is doing and suggest if the bottom of the cage is causing problems she can cut plywood to fit and it may work better. Just a thought. So sad what some unthinking, or uncaring people do. :( |
As the saying goes, you were between a rock & a hard place and I feel for you. Knowing what's best for the dog & yet having to adopt the "customer is right" stance to keep your job was a difficult spot. It's too bad she wouldn't take your wise advice. I can't imagine the rabbit cage was any cheaper and cleaning it is not easier either. I wonder if she was required to sign something - like "This product is being purchased for use with a ____ (Yorkie). This is not in keeping with the use for which it was originally intended and the customer assumes all responsibility for damage to the animal's feet, nails, legs or any other injuries. The store & its personnel assume no liability for improper use of this product." ) might have given her pause. People like that have so little sense yet always seem to blame others -"well, you sold it to me!" type of thinking -maybe you could suggest it to the store manager. The plywood suggestion was good...even a carpet square would help! |
Wow. I admire (and understand) your restraint. I don't think I would have been able to hold back setting this woman straight. A 12 week puppy in a rabbit cage? That's just cruel. |
