Question about finding a mix breed.... OK I know the site to go to, to find breeders in you state for pure bred dogs but what about mixes. My grandparents had to put their 14 year old. Pom. to sleep about 8 months ago. She was the sweetest pup and only weighed about 3 or 4 lbs. So my grandparents are now finally ready to get another pup. I've checked local papers and stuff but their picky. My grandmother is fixed on a mix breed.... She thinks they are healthier. and also she has never paid more than $250.00 for a dog and she knows she's not getting a pure bred for that and she doesn't want to spend more than $300.00. Also it has to be a small dog. Ya know they are my grandparents so they don't want a 15lb. dog jumping on their lap. Well, their keeping their eye out at local rescues and they've made it my job to check the internet. ANY HELP PLEASE!!!!!!! Crystal Also it has to be female....LOL.... I told you they were picky |

Yea, their looking on petfinder and going to local shelters. They just havn't found one to fit them yet. They jsut wanted me to look and see about stuff on the internet for them. I think it's more them giving me something to do while I'm at work. Everyday I have about an hours worth of work to try and divide into 8 hrs. So all I do is watch my soaps and play on the internet all day. Crystal |

What about your local newspaper? Many times, we get mixed dogs in the free section here. |
browniesmom - Thanks.... I e-mailed my grandmother the first pup. The second one said no kids and even though my grandparents don't have any I do have a couple younger cousins that the pup couldn't be around. Thanks so much... Crystal |
1) Keep watching the newspapers - every weekend a lot of new puppies are being advertised. 2) Visit all the shelters in your area. 3) Groomers - Call some groomers - they know more about puppy litters on the way than anyone else in town. 4) Tell all your friends (and people you work with) that you are looking for a mixed breed little puppy. 5) Put up signs at your local grocery store - where you work - etc. Have your friends do this also. 6) We shouldn't buy from petstores - but we do have a couple smaller grooming-type pet stores where I live that occasionally sell wonderful little puppies that are never from puppy mills. One (family-owned for 50 years) is where I got my little Yorke - and I have become well acquainted with his breeder through the store - and have a wonderful healthy little dog. I can't imagine that within a month or two you can't find the perfect little pet or your grandparents. Be patient and keep looking.. Good luck! Carol Jean |
Carol Jean - Thanks. I didn't think about calling my groomer and that also made me think of calling my vet. He's a personal friend of my father-inlaw's and I'm sure he would know something also. Crystal |
Definitely check the animal shelter regularly. Ours always has sweet little dogs, a lot of them purebreeds or dominant-breeds, lol. Right before I found Bobby, our animal shelter's pet of the week was an adorable terrier named Toto -- he looked exactly like a cairn terrier so if he was a mix, cairn was dominant. I called about him but he was adopted FAST. The shelter worker said they had some toy poodle mixes available, too. Julie |
Have any of you checked out the price of mixes lately. On a lot of different ones the mixes are more expensive than the purebreds. puppydogweb.com does have some mixes listed and they do list by state. Best of luck :) |
I haven't run across any mixes that cost "more than purebreds," but a lot of the prices are right up there. And, we certainly don't need to pay those high prices for these little mixes anyway. As far as mixes go - where do we draw the line - or do we? Does a mix mean -only two different breeds - three - four - or some unknown number? Do we need to know exactly what breeds make up our new little pup? - or can we be just as happy and have just as much fun trying to guess just exactly what he is. I think it would be exciting go out looking for a little mixed breed - the world is yours!!!!!! Good luck! Carol Jean |
