coughs ONLY after drinking water?? Hi, I have a 2yr old that had pups a few wks ago. she is in my bedroom and I notice that she coughs, and honks, gags, after drinking water. she just drank out of a water bottle and didn't cough, but then drank fast out of her dish and did the cough thing. She coughs for about 2-3 times. When she is excited or playing she never coughs, it's ONlY after drinking. I pressed lightly on her trechea to see if I could get her to cough and nothing happened. No runny nose or anything like that. I had her vet checked before I bred her and she checked fine. I never noticed this before. I am going to take her to my vet to have her trechea checked but was wondering if anyone else had something like this and it wasn't a collapsed trechea? I am so scared because I know it "can" be hereditary and I am a worry wart about my babies. I never noticed this before or I wouldn't have bred her until I had answers. Could it be thats she is just drinking to fast? thanks for any thought or ideas!! |
I have no idea why she does it, but I just wanted to let you know that my baby does the same thing. I think he has allergies or asthma or something. Looking forward to seeing more answers |
Nigel honks too. My Nigel sometimes honks. He does it randomly, after drinking water or sitting down, really no rhyme or reason for it. The vet did an x-ray on him and his tracea was not collapsed but it does taper more than it should at the end. |
Oh I have no idea, Maybe you should call her Vet. I hope she feels better soon. |
I've seen a couple of posts where some yorkies had a condition where they kept breathing when drinking. Typically dogs hold their breath while drinking. The posts I read just used a water bottle as apposed to the bowl. Kind of like a hampster/rabbit bottle. You may want to check with your vet to see if she has this condition but it doesn't seem to take a lot to help, just a new drinking tool. :) |

Since she doesn't do this when drinking from a water bottle I would like to suggest you get one of those water dishes that are elevated some to about chest high. This way they are not drinking nose down and breathing in at the same time getting water going into the wrong slots! :) |
Rosi does this too sometimes when drinking water, never when running, also sometimes when she gets the hicups. Allways scares me ! |
