big yorkie?
 

I was searching the old forums for pics of yorkies with floppy ears (that's another story for another post) and came across a thread where members were talking about the "opinions", comments, etc., that they get because they've got "huge" 8 or 10 lb yorkies. I thought I was the only one! Ginger's pushing 12 lbs (and no, she's not fat), and people are constantly questioning my intellingence...you know, maybe she's not a yorkie, or "are you sure?" LOL

It's rarely other yorkie owners, usually it's someone who's brother's bosses' cousin, owns a yorkie...yorkie owners are way too smart and like yorkies too much to make such comments!

Anyway, I think we should unite and come up with the perfect comeback!

When people around me ask if my big guy is a yorkie, I just say yup he's just a bigger one is all and then i usually have to hear about their brother's cousin's neice that has a teacup and how cute it is compared to my giant one, but I could care less as far as I'm concerned I have the perfect dog.

Been there! Or they'll ask "is it a STANDARD yorkie" (I guess since schnauzers come in three sizes...)

Years ago my family had Cecily who was 13 pounds at her biggest. Her ears were floppy for the most part because when we got her they were taped and she seemed so miserable that we took it off. This time around I wanted a little one with stand up ears and boy did they ever. She really had to grow into them. I get the opposite response. I'm always telling people that there's no such thing as a teacup and all yorkies are toys. One person actually got mad at me for "correcting her in public" when she asked me if Debbie was a teacup. As you know yorkies were originally bigger and have been bred down over the years, not always with the healthiest results. Just ignore these people. You know you have a great dog and don't owe anyone an explanation.

You could simply tell them that yours is a teaPOT yorkie :)

Lol..they come in all sizes and are loved anyhow. Someone somewhere else mentioned this and said when folks ask about her chubby yorkie she tells them she is a potbellied yorkie...lol

lol...teapot yorkie...now that's funny! I'll have to give that one a try. :D

Bobby weighs 9 pounds right now and he's 6 months old so I imagine he'll be about 11 pounds full-grown? That's still 5 pounds less than the original Yorkshire terrier's average weight, from what I've read.

OMG, I am SO glad he's bigger! With the terrier energy-level and tenacity, I could not imagine having to ensure that a 5-pounder didn't get hurt all day, every day! I'd be a nervous wreck! Bobby is a rough-and-tumble guy so it's a darn good thing he's bigger! Even now, I have to make sure he doesn't gleefully try to jump off the back of the sofa after he's been bouncing around!

I LOVE the teapot Yorkie comment! Hahahahahahahahaha! :thumbup:

Bobby only weighs 9pounds at 6 months.My Peanut weights 12lbs now at 6months.He is our little Teapot,more to love :D

yet, I'm sitting here looking at my little girl, she's such a little peanut. Really who could call her big?

I'm anxiously awaiting my chance to use the "teapot" yorkie comment! lol

I can't take credit for the teapot comment..I've heard it on here before when talking about a larger Yorkie..but I thought it was just adorable! Can you imagine the looks of confusion you'd be getting?? :lol tears ;)

I ran a thread here once looking for the smallest and largest Yorkies... At one point we had come up with Yorkies from 1 1/2 pounds to 16 pounds.

I am amazed at the possible range in weight for one little breed of dog. This single breed can be one weight or more than ten times that same weight --- and still be the same breed. (Why wouldn't this confuse people!!!!!)

We are constantly discussing our Yorkies weight amoung ourselves. Admit it -weight is a popular issue among Yorkie owners. Therefore, it doesn't surprise me a bit that other people are confused about the different sizes our little Yorkies can be. And, of course, most people don't know a lot about Yorkies, so they often assume or at least wonder if they don't come in different sizes....small - standard, etc. Sounds like an intelligent assumption or question to ask to me.

I think that since we own an amazing little dog that can be very small or weigh more than ten times that same weight - we're always going to have a little explaining and educating to do.

And please, remember, we have not only size to deal with with out little dogs - we have different coat types and textures, different coat lengths, different colors, different haircuts, ears up, ears down, and on and on and on. Sometimes when I look at all the different Yorkie pictures here on YT -- it's hard, even for me, to believe that they are all the same breed.

The picture idea would be great...if we could truly get them side by side for comparison. I'm going to a yorkie playdate this weekend, maybe I'll get a chance to get some pics of my little teapot besides someone's little teacup!

Seriously though, I didn't mean to offend. I've got some extra free time today, and thought this might be something we could discuss, and maybe share some stories. I don't get to see many yorkies around here, so it's great to hear others experiences. You can't tell by a pic if a yorkies 4 lbs or 10!

I don't think anyone minds educating, (In case you haven't noticed, I LOVE to talk about my girl) but there are those out their who come across as if we (the yorkie owners) don't really know what we've got. I've been told by strangers, and in no uncertain terms, that she's not a yorkie, but a silky, and I've had people tell me that I was taken because she's so big (mind you this BIG dog is only 8 " tall) that she can't possibly be pure bred....but now I've happily got my teapot comment ready!

I think this is a great topic to discuss. I am amazed when I hear how small yorkies can be because the only yorkie I have ever owned, "little" Ted, is a whapping 15 1/2 pounds. He weighs more than both his parents combined!
I'll try to post a couple pictures here through photobucket. This is my yorkie, Ted and a pic of my three dogs with me. My little maltese is 7 pounds and the yorkie mix is 18 pounds.

Our sweet girl Gracie weighs in at 8 pounds and is 18 months old. We love her size but have had to put up with people too commenting on her HUGE SIZE! She has floppy ears too because she looked so miserable when they were taped so we stopped doing it.

I've seen Yorkies in all sizes as well. I remember going into petsmart and the groomer was grooming a Yorkie and I heard a customer say that is a big Yorkie and the groomer said that he has to be mixed with something. I lot of people don't realize that they can come in different sizes. No matter what size they are, I love them all.

Let's make one of them a babydoll face and one a more standard looking version just to keep it amusing. :D

While it certainly is interesting I can understand why there is a Standard and why most experienced reputable breeders strive to meet the Standard. Size will vary, even when you aim for the perfect specimen, but everything else from hair cut to poor breeding makes it difficult to spot a Yorkie.

Only time I ever saw Yorkies that looked alike was at a dog show! No mistaking those guys.
