Anyone have a Chihuahua? Hi. My stepdaughter (who does not live with us) wants to buy a chihuahua. This dog will spend alot of time with my yorkies, as she works full time and I only work four days a week. The dog will be with me whenever I'm home and she's not. Also, she will be leaving it with us whenever she goes away for a weekend (approx. 6x/year). My question is this...does anyone have a chihuahua and a yorkie? Do they get along? I've read that chihuahuas are a one person dog (they only bond with one person). Is this true? We've narrowed it down to a female as I don't want any marking in my house (Carter currently doesn't mark but if a male was around he might start). Any advice? |
I have a Chihuahua and a Yorkie and they get along great. My Chi is about 2 yrs old and my Yorkie is 10 month old. I think they make a great combo. My only, very small, complaint about Chihuahuas is that they shed a little. That's all! |
The only chihuahuas I've encountered have been, as you said, one-person dogs and mean as hell to everyone else. I used to work for a hospice agency and one of our patients had one -- the dog wouldn't let anyone near the patient, not even the family members! Providing patient care was a major headache as the dog would snarl, snap and try to bite! Since you're going to be caring for the dog quite often, make sure you like the dog, too! LOL, can you convince your daughter to get a Yorkie, instead? :) Julie |
My chihuahua does great with my yorkie. From my experience I find chihuahuas to be a lot more timid than yorkies but the two breeds compliment each other. :) |
they are deff a one person dog but they can be really great with other people if trained right |

Well..... 2 Attachment(s) My family first started out with a female Chihuahua, named Rica. She'll be 10 years old this summer. We then rescued a purebred Miniature Pinscher, Torch, from a shelter. He's now 8 years old. My sister then moved back in with her Pitbull, Bubbles, who is now 5 years old. I then rescued a Chihuahua mix, Luca, who'll be 3 years old on Sunday. :) And now, I'll be bringing home my lil yorkie pup, Adrianna, at the end of March. :) From my experiences with my Chihuahuas....they're either extremely friendly and great with all people....or as they get older, prefer to be with their family, and not strangers. I'm attaching pictures of my chihuahua Luca and my parents chihuahua Rica. :) |
1 Attachment(s) Our girls LOVE each other.... they are always playing and snuggling together. |

Yes we love Rotties too. We had Roxanne for 12 years, it was so sad when she passed away. Princess was so upset, they were the best of friends. Our Vet told us we should look for another one soon, as Princess was very close to her. I wasn't really ready, but our childern were, and Princess ran right up to her, so it was meant to be. It wasn't easy at first as she looks so much like Roxanne. But Princess fell in love with her, and they play together with Poncho all day. Rottie's sometimes get a bad rep. But, we feel you get out of them what you put in. Mandy is a love bug, she has no idea she's 100 pounds. Even the Mailman Loves her. :) When we take walks down the street, everyone always stops to see all three of them. Our home has lots of very spoiled furbabies, I wouldn't have it any other way. :) |

Super cute!!!!   |
I have had two chihuahuas and neither of them liked any other dogs besides another Chihuahua. My little Bonnie, 3 pounds of fire, would grab the wrinkled face of our English Bulldog and run him away from his own food bowl! Bonnie now lives with some friends in Tenessee and their Chihuahua Scooter and she loves it there. When we go to visit, she gets all up in Oscar's face...he does not care tho...it IS attention after all!!! He is so fast, Bonnie can't catch him...but she snarls and snaps at him...it is rather comical tho! Good luck...they do shed tho, that is the ONLY downside to a Chihuahua over a Yorkie that I know of. I think my Chihuahua's were actually more loving than my Yorkie, too. Either way, great dogs!!! |
